The Powell/Collins Homepage
I am researching the Powell/Collins families of northern Missouri. -----The Powell family from Mercer Co., Missouri: James B. Powell was born in Ohio ca. 1825, where he married Hannah Anderson. Their eldest son Isaac (1845-1927) was my great-great-grandfather. In 1848-49, the Powell and other families moved from Monroe Co., Ohio to Appanoose Co., Iowa, where they are enumerated in the 1850 Census. Listed in James Powell's family are his wife Hannah, son Isaac, and two daughters: Hannah J. (born ca. 1847) and Margaret (born ca. 1849).Sometime in the early 1850s James' wife Hannah died, and by 1856 he had married Isabella, whose maiden name might be Snow. At this point the family seems to have left Iowa for Missouri: in the 1860 censuses, parts of the family (including James' second wife Isabella) appear in two different households in Putnam and Mercer Cos., Missouri. I have no idea where James was in 1860 or why the family was split up, but he eventually married again. He died in Mercer County and is buried in the Salem Cemetery. In the 1860 Census Isaac Powell (James' eldest son) appears in Mercer Co., Ravanna Twp, in the household of Robert and Mary Southers. In April 1870 Isaac married their daughter, Loretta D. Southers (1851-1910), who was first cousin to Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Canary). I am interested in any information on this family or its various branches. In 1850, there were Powell families living in Appanoose Co., Iowa that are related to James Powell's family. Other related names of Mercer Co., Missouri include: Canary, Carver, Evans, Maple, McLaughlin, Pickett, Robinson, Smith, Southers, Sowers (Sauer), Vanderpool, White, Williams, Wilson, Young +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ -----The Collins family of Grundy Co., Missouri: Isaac 'Milton' Collins was born in Livingston Co. in 1840 or 1841(Grundy Co. was formed in 1841 from part of Livingston Co., Missouri). His parents died shortly after he was born, and he was 'bound out' to Joseph Rooks, head of a Grundy Co. pioneer family. I do not know the names of Isaac's parents. By 1861 Isaac had married Mary Anna Kelly (1845-1926), and they raised a large family. He enlisted twice for the Civil War, but was medically discharged both times. Isaac Collins died July 15, 1929 in Laredo, Grundy County, and he is buried in the Rural Dale Cemetery. One of his sons, Christopher C. 'Kit' Collins (1871-1947), married into the Clingingsmith family. The Clingingsmiths, who settled in the area during the 1870s, are a branch of a large Pennsylvania German family-- the name appears under various spellings. Other related names of Grundy Co., Missouri include: Baum, Clingingsmith (Klingensmith), Douglas, Gunckle, Hoffman, Kelly, Patterson, Pavin/Parvin, Plott, Reitenauer, Smail, Vance, Wallace, Zarver | The Powell/Collins Homepage Updated April 19, 2006 |
