Name of paper and date unknown
John R. Prather was born August 27, 1853; died September 26, 1905, aged 52 years and about one month. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss. He professed religion several years ago, under. the ministry of Rev. T. G. Pettygrew, who
was then his pastor and conducting a revival meeting at Pleasant Grove church near his home (now Selmer curcit), but never connected him self with the church until three or four months before his death. He died with that dreadful disease cancer. He was
a sufferer for many years, but only confined to his bed six or eight months before his death. He bore his sickness with the that Christian fortitude which only a child of God could, being always cheerful, and hopeful, he would often say to the writer
wh??? and prepared to go when it was the Lord's will to call him.
We laid his body to rest in the Pleasant Grove cemetery after a short funeral service, conducted by the writer
We will say to his loved ones weep not as those who have no hope, for we believe if we art faithful until death we shall meet him on the banks of sweet deliverance.
J. B. MAXEDON

See notes of his wife, Emma A. Shields.
Records show that there were ten children. The third child, Nathaniel, died at an early age. The fourth child, Arthur, died at an early age. The 1900 census shows Cora age 2 as a part of the family. Cora would be the ninth child. Possibly, Cora died at
an early age. Nathaniel, Arthur nor Cora were ever mentioned by Harriet Ann. The 1905 obituary of John R. Prather reads that he is survived by a wife and seven children, therefore, Cora could not have been a living child in 1905.
Prather. The 1860 census reads John V.W.
Some records show his name to be John V. W. Prather; other records read John R.
.... Other hand written records read John V.W. Other records and his obituary read John R. He probally used both names i.e. John R. and John W. Prather. His brother Josiah Wesley being referred to as J.W. could be the reason he was referred to as John
R.

WIFE - Emma A. SHIELDS Emma A. Shields was born in Tennessee in 1857. She died about 1932/33 in Corinth and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McNairy County.

Sheilds in the 1860 census of McNairy County.
Marriage records show a R.J. Shields marrying Mattie S. Armstrong, Sept. 8,1881, Book H, page 524. Records also show T.M. Shields marrying Sara C. Armstrong, Sept. 8, 1872, Book E, page 439.

CHILD I - Maggie Magnolia PRATHER Dates of birth, death and marriage is from information recieved from Douglas H. Prather of Memphis. Marriage date is from McNairy County marriage records, Volumn L, page 70.

As far as is known, Maggie and Charley lived in Ramer all of their lives.
Maggie's son Walter was a deaf/mute. He was a very jolly person; very likeable, and fun to be around.
Using the dates on the 1880 census and the dates on the marriage record show Maggie being thirteen or fourteen years old when she married therefore a closer look needs to be taken at census records. Census dates are very often wrong because CHILD I -
Maggie Magnolia PRATHER (Continued) the person being questioned does not know the dates and therefore that person or the census taker would guess at the age.
