WILLIAM4 ALLEY, JR. (WILLIAM3, JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born 1510 in Wycombe, England, and died April 15, 1570 in London, England. He married SYBIL BODLEIGH. She died 1570 in England. Notes for WILLIAM ALLEY, JR.: Biography of William Alley Lives of the Bishops of Exeter William Alley, S.T.P., a native of Wycombe, Bucks, and educated at Eton, but finished his course of studies at Cambridge and Oxford, whilst Prebendary of St. Paul's, London, was fixed on by Queen Elizabeth to succeed the deprived Turberville. On 27th April, 1560, she issued her congé d'élire to our Dean and Chapter. It was delivered to the President, Chancellor Levison, on 5th May, in the absence of the newly elected Dean, Dr. Gregory Dodds: the election took place on 20th that month; but his consecration 14th July that year (Parker's 'Register,' fol. 80). The revenues of the see and of his chapter had of late been lamentably reduced: fortunately the Rectory of Honiton was given to the Bishop towards the better maintenance of his rank; and in its parochial church, and even in the rectory-house, he held several ordinations "in Rectoria - in domo Domini Episcopi apud Honyton," as we learn from his Registers. Owing to the impoverished state of the finances of his Dean and Chapter, with the unanimous consent of its members, and under the Royal authority, he diminished the number of the Canons of the Cathedral from twenty-four to nine. His statute for this purpose is dated 22nd February, 1560-1. Attempts were made at subsequent periods to set aside this ordinance, which conferred the power and emoluments on the favoured nine, to the exclusion of the other fifteen; but it proved useless to combat with a practice, legalised by time and due authority. Hoker, who knew the bishop well, commends his affability of manners, regularity of life, and singular learning; adding that "his library was replenished with all the best sort of writers, which most gladly he would impart, and make open to every good scholar and student, whose company and conference he did most desire and embrace;" but in his MS. 'History,' p. 359, in describing tho Mayor, Robert Midwynter, he says, that "in office he showed himself, as he was, an upright justice, and governed the city in very good order. In nothing was he more stowte, than he was against Bishop Alley, when he brought a commyssion to be a Justice of the Peace within the citie, contrary to the lybertes of the same." After governing the diocese for about nine years and a half, he died, according to his epitaph, on 15th April, 1570, aged 60, and was buried in the choir of his cathedral. He is known to the literary world by his 'Poor Man's Librarie,' printed in folio by John Day, London, 1565, or 'Lectures upon the First Epistle of Saint Peter, red publiquely in the Cathedrall Church of Saint Paule, within the Citye of London, in 1560. Here are adioyned at the ende of euery special treatise, certain fruitful annotacions called miscellanea, because they do entreate of diverse and sundry matters.' Per Ray Alley, an Alley descendant from Northwood, Middlesex, England, the will of William Alley Bishop of Exeter reads as follows: The T.N.O.G. Amen 1st day of April AD 1570 I William Alley by Permission of God Bishop of Exon (now Exeter) sick in body but perfect of remembrance make my last will and testament in like manner. I bequeath my soul to Almighty God. My body to be buried in Christian burial that to my wife and friends she be thought most reverent. Item all my books of divinity to my son Roger Alley Archdeacon of Cornwall. I give to my son-in-law Christopher Bodleighe all my books of philosophy and physic. Item all my books of humanity to my younger sons to be given to them as they shall increase in learning some at one time and some at another as often as need shall require. To his servants John Martin and Robert Cole 10 pence each. The residue once my funeral and all debts discharged to my wife Sybil whom I make my sole executrix. She to see that all my children are goodly brought up and educated and to give them such further maintenance as shall meet and require such children to have. He then names persons to see his will properly executed. To allow him a living "the Rectory at Honiton Devon was given to the Bishop towards the better maintenance of his rank, where he held several ordinations in the parish church and rectory house (v) 1561 - Made Doctor of Divinity at Oxford (i) 1561 - Jan. 1st Queen Elizabeth gave him a silver cup for the respect she held him in. From then on gave him a gift of a silver cup each new year. 1561-62(c) - It is just possible that about this time he married for the second time (ii) 1563 - Birth of a daughter Jane or Joan (see IGI Devon England) 1563 - 13th Oct. his son Roger collated to the Archdeaconry of Cornwall. Later rector of Pyworthy, Devon in the summer of 1581 1564 - Possible birth of a son Peter 1565 - Birth of a son Austin. An entry in the register of the parish of St Mary Major Exeter states '1565 xxiii daye of september was christened Austin Alleye, the son of the Right Worshipfull, my Lord William Alleye, Bisshoppe of Exeter by his wife Sybil' (iv) 1565 - With others translated the book of Deuteronomy in the bible, and was author of 'Poor Mans Library' 1570 - 1st April made his last will and testament. 1570 - Died 15th April aged 60. He was buried in the Cathedral near his Choir. There is no plaque or mention of him in the Cathedral except an embroidered cushion, and a wooden board listing the Bishops of Exeter (ix) Notes: (i) From the Eton College register (ii) It is clear that William's wife was Sybil. Her maiden name is not so clear. In Alley Ancestors by Gene Alley it is shown as Bodleigh. Records at Exeter and from (i) show it as Honacott, daughter of a man by that name from Landket in Devon. There must also be some doubt as to Sybil being William's first wife. A gap of 30 years between son Roger and son Austin, although quite possible, leaves some doubt. Jane or Joan was followed quickly by (possibly) Peter and certainly Austin. Sybil would have been at least in her late forties when she had these three children in as many years. (iii) From 'Alley Ancestors' page Eng-7 by Gene Alley of Udall, USA; The Gregarth Publishing Co. (iv) Sybil Honacott is shown in a card index to have married twice, (1) William Alley (2) Richard Dillon of Chimwell, Bratton Fleming, a member of an Irish family (from the Westcountry Studies Library, Exeter). The Irish connection might have started with Richard Dillon. Did he take Sybil and her young family to Ireland? In (iii) Gene records Sybil's name as Bodleigh, if her name was in fact Honacott, then she must have married before William. This might explain in his will, why he described Christopher Bodleigh as his son in law. He did not have a daughter old enough to be married. This son in law might be his stepson, and Sybil's son by a previous marriage. Gene (iii) records a son Jerome 1540-1635 and a note that he was a 'Matric of Oxon' later moving to Ireland. No record of his birth marriage or death survives, there is however a record of a Jerome of Christ Church Devon Matric 27th Nov. 1581 age 22. In Devon & Cornwall notes & queries Vol. 19 p. 35 is the following 'Jerome Alley and several descendents of W. Alley are said to have been clergymen in Ireland. Jerome is described as a DD and MD a freeman of New Ross Co. Wexford 30th May 1679 and Peter Alley Rector of Dunamore Queens Co., for 73 years. Died 22 Aug 1763 at 110 years, had 3 wives and 33 children. There are records of William Alley, Bishop of Exeter marrying a Sybil Honacott. (THOMAS A.10, THOMAS9, THOMAS8, FRANCIS7, JEROME6, ROGER5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born 1722 in Henrico Co., VA, and died Unknown. He married JANE UNKNOWN. She was born 1723, and died Unknown. Notes for THOMAS ALLEY, SR.: The reader should be aware that some researchers list this Thomas Alley, Sr. as the husband of Jane Ealey who died Mary 29, 1870 at the Battle of Beauford's Retreat. The source for that assumption appears to be taken from a court transcription in Montgomery Co., VA Records: April 5, 1787, Page 818: Jane Alley is entitled to pay of Thomas Alley, her husband, who died of wounds received at Buford's Retreat. "Rebels and Redcoats" - "Buford's Defeat" was at the Waxhow of North Carolina or near the NC line, "113 Americans were killed on the field. 150 were maimed so badly that Tarleton was obliged to parole them where they lay. In the summer twilight they were loaded into wagons and carried to the church of the Waxhows, where the good Irishwomen of the neighborhood dressed their wounds and comforted the dying. Only 53 of Buford's men survived Tarlatan's bayonets and swords to be taken prisoner. Tarleton's loss was 5 killed, 14 wounded." Some of Thomas' descendants feel that this reference refers to Thomas Ely, not Thomas Alley. Further research has disclosed that there was not a Thomas Alley listed in the military records for this battle but there was a Thomas Ely. This reference is also thought to be the source of Jane's last name of Ealey. Descendants of this line are urged to make their own determination. The possibility exists that this Thomas Alley, Sr., born 1722 who is listed as the son of Thomas Alley, Sr. & Francis Reavis is actually the Thomas Alley, Jr. born 1745 who married Susan Howerton and listed as a son of Thomas 1722. Hamilton; From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, pages 52-53. In a letter written from Metamora, Indiana, by Samuel Alley, to Dr. Lyman C. Draper, dated April 28, 1884, (1) he says: My father's sister, Fanny Napper and her five (5) children were killed and scalped by Indians near Fort Blackmore. I was born in a few yards of the fort in 1801, and have just returned from a visit to my old birthplace. The ground where the fort stood was being cultivated. A large apple tree stands near the fort that my father set out. It is to this day called the "John Alley Apple Tree". My aunt and family were killed, I think, in 1777. My father was born at Petersburg, VA, in 1760, and settled on Clinch when a young boy. Died on Piper Creek, Franklin Co., Indiana, in 1842, where I now live, aged 82 years. Fanny Napper was a daughter of James Alley, Sr., who along with his brother Thomas Alley, Sr., were very early settlers on the Clinch River in the present Scott Co., VA. The writer has been unable to discover in the area any details of just how she and her five children were slain, but in the Shane Historical Collection (2) of the Draper Manuscripts is an interview with Jessee Graddy who tells of his trip from Virginia to Kentucky with his arrival at the Crab Orchard in Lincoln Co., KY, September 3, 1777. If Graddy is telling of the killing of Fanny Napper, which he undoubtedly is, although he mentions no names, then she and her children must have been slain in July or August of 1777, Graddy says: The morning before we came to the ford of Clinch (Blackmore's Station was 10 miles beyond that) these murders were committed. A mother and four (4) children killed within eight of the fort. The husband was in the field, but escaped. A girl about half grown, and three little boys tomahawked and scalped, who were talking while their brains were boiling out. The grandmother asked them if they saw their little brother (this is perhaps the 5th child). What had become of him? Said they didn't know. These were Dutch people. (3) We stayed a good part of the day. Their aunt sat on a stump in sight of the fort and cried all day. Went by Blackmore's Station next day and didn't see the smoke of a chimney after that until we got to Boonesboro. The pretty springs of water and the woods rendered Powell Valley exceedingly beautiful. I could have stopped very freely in it. A rock road all the way down and mountains to one side of us. Just before we got to the foot of Cumberland Mountain the company, three fourths of a mile ahead of us, had all their horses stolen. They could do nothing better than just turn their featherbeds loose. They could do nothing with them about their cattle. We never saw any Indians and were not interrupted. I was most afraid coming down Cumberland Mountain. The place was narrow and rocky. Stood up on either side not broader than a house. Woods more beautiful in Cumberland Valley than any other place. (1) Draper Mss 5 C 70 (2) Draper Mss 13 CC 130 (3) In early days in this area it was very common to refer to people of German extraction as being Dutch. The word Napper, variantly spelled Napier or Nappier, is perhaps from the German. The name is still to be found in this area and the spelling usually takes the form of the latter two ---------------------------------------- USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material. MARY12 ALLEY (JAMES L.11, THOMAS A.10, THOMAS9, THOMAS8, FRANCIS7, JEROME6, ROGER5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, JOHN2, UNKNOWN1) was born 1762 in Floyd Co., KY, and died Aft. 1803 in Virginia. She married SAMUEL PORTER, SR. 1777 in Floyd Co., KY, son of PATRICK PORTER and SUSANNAH WALKER. He was born July 07, 1757 in Guilford Co., NC, and died 1803 in Scott Co., VA. Notes for MARY ALLEY: The Capture of Jane Whittaker and Polly Alley by Emory L. Hamilton; From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, pages 46-51. This story has become the most widely known of any Indian story in Southwest Virginia. It was told around so many firesides that it has almost taken on the aspect of a folk tale. No doubt it is true for the names used in the tale are those of pioneer settlers of the area, while I have not been able to find any supporting documentary evidence to confirm it. There were, however, many Indian killings and captures on the frontier that never found their way into official documents. Charles B. Coale, an early newspaper writer for an Abingdon paper was perhaps the first to bring this story into print in his book "Wilburn Waters", and he gives no authority for his source. It is from the above book that this version is taken, with footnotes added. During the spring of 1777 - several years before the capture and murder of the Livingston family on the North Fork of Holston, the same half-breed Benge and a savage white man by the name of Hargus, crossed the range of hills north of Clinch at High Knob, and made their way to Bluegrass Fort (1) on Stoney Creek, which is not far from what is known as Osborne's Ford (2), in Scott County. The white man Hargus had been living in the neighborhood, but had absconded to the Indians to evade punishment for crime, and became an inhuman persecutor of his race. The Indians having cautiously and stealthily approached the river down Stoney Creek, and fearing they might be discovered, crossed some distance below and came up in the rear of a high cliff south of and opposite the fort, concealing their main body in some bushes at the base, in order to command a view of the fort, they sent one of their number to the summit of the cliff to spy out the condition of the fort and to act as a decoy. He ascended in the night, and climbed a tall cedar (3) with thick foliage at the top, on the very verge of the precipe, and just at break of day began to gobble like a wild turkey. This imitation was so well executed it would have been successful but for the warnings of an old Indian fighter present by the name of Matthew Gray (4). Hearing what they supposed to be a turkey, and desiring him for breakfast, some of the younger members of the company proposed to go up the cliff and shoot him, but Gray told them if they wanted to keep their scalps on their heads they had better let that turkey alone, and if they would follow his directions he would give them an Indian for breakfast. Having promised to obey his instructions, he took several of them with them to a branch which he knew to be in full view of the Indians, and told them to wash and dabble in the stream to divert the attention of the enemy for half an hour, while he went to look for the turkey; which still continued to gobble at short intervals. Gray having borrowed an extra rifle from David Cox, (5) crouched below the bank of the stream, an in this manner followed its course to where it emptied into the river half a mile below, at a place known as Shallow Shoals. Here he took the timber, eluding the vigilance of the Indians by getting into their rear. He then crept cautiously up the ridge, guided by the gobbling of the Indian in the top of a cedar on the cliff. Getting within about seventy-five yards of the tree, and waiting until his turkeyship had finished an extra big gobble, he drew a bead upon him and put a ball in his head. With a yell and spring the Indian went crashing through the tree tops and over the precipe, a mangled mass of flesh and bones. Then commenced a race for life. Gray had played a desperate game, and nothing but his fleetness and his knowledge of savage craft could save him. He knew that the Indians in ambush would go to their companion on hearing the report of the rifle, and that they were not more than two hundred yards away. He did his best running and dodging, but they were so close upon him that he would have been captured or killed, had not the men of the fort rushed out to his rescue. The Indians finding that they had been discovered, and that they were not strong enough to attack or besiege the fort, started in the direction of Castle's Woods. The persons at Bluegrass knowing that the settlement at Castle's Woods was not aware that the Indians were in the vicinity, determined to warn them, but the difficulty was how this was to be done, and who would be bold enough to undertake it, as the Indians were between the two forts. When a volunteer for the perilous expedition was called for, Matthew Gray, who but an hour before had made such a narrow escape, boldly offered his services, and, getting the fastest horse and two rifles, started out through the almost unbroken forest. Moving cautiously along the trail, he came near Ivy Spring, about two miles from the fort, when he saw signs that satisfied him that the Indians had halted at the spring. There was no way to flank them, and he must make a perilous dash or fail in his mission of mercy. Being an old Indian fighter, he knew that they seldom put out pickets. The trail making a short curve near the spring, he at once formed the plan of riding quietly up to the curve, and then, with a shot and a yell, to dash through them. This he did, and before they had sufficiently recovered from their surprise to give him a parting volley, he was out of reach. He arrived at the settlement in safety, and thus in all probability saved the lives of all the settlers. The Indians, however, captured two women on the way - Polly Alley (6) at Osborne's Ford, as they went up the river and Jane Whittaker near Castle's Woods. Finding the fort at Castle's Woods fully prepared for their reception, the band had to abandon their murderous purpose and pass on with their captives, without permitting themselves to be seen. Reaching Guess' Station (7) they remained part of the night, but finding it well prepared for defense, they continued their journey to the Breaks (8) where the Russell and Pound Forks of Big Sandy pass through the Cumberlands. Here, tradition says, they tarried half a day, and loaded themselves with silver ore. This tradition has led some to suppose that this was the place where Sol Mullins (9), the noted maker of spurious coin, obtained his metal, as he long inhabited that region. After this they traveled every day, resting at night, until they reached the Ohio at the mouth of Sandy. Crossing the river on a raft of logs with their prisoners, who suffered more than can be described or conceived on the long march, they reached their destination at Sandusky. The two young women were closely confined for some time after their arrival, though they were eventually stripped and painted and allowed the liberty of the village, closely watched for a month or more, but seeing they made no attempt to escape, the Indians abated their vigilance. Observing this the girls determined to make an attempt to escape. Having been permitted to wander about at pleasure from time to time and punctually returning at night, the Indians were thrown off their guard. Having wandered one day from the village farther than usual, and being in a dense forest, they started out on the long journey home. After traveling all night, they found themselves only about eight miles from the village, and finding a hollow log, they crept into it, with the determination of remaining concealed during the day. They had been in it but a few minutes when Hargus and two or three Indians came along in pursuit and sat down upon it, and the girls heard them form their plans for the next day's search. Returning late in the afternoon, having lost the trail, the Indians sat down upon the same log to rest, and again the occupants beneath them heard their plans for pursuit. These were, that a party should pass down each of two rivers which had their sources near their village and emptying into the Ohio. They became very much enraged at having been baffled by two inexperienced girls, and threatened their victims with all kinds of torture should they be recaptured. Hargus, more furious than the Indians themselves, striking his tomahawk into the log to emphasize his threats, and finding it return a hollow sound, declared the girls might be in it, as they had been traced thus far, where the trail was lost, and sent one of the savages to the end of the log to see. The savage went and looked, but seeing that a spider had stretched its web across the aperture, he made no further examination. This web, which had probably not been there an hour, saved them from recapture, and it may be from a cruel death. After the Indians left, the girls, having heard their plans, left the log and resumed their weary journey, taking a leading ridge which ran at right angle with the Ohio and led them to it not far from opposite the mouth of Sandy. They could hear the yells of the Indians in pursuit each day and night until they reached the river, when, from a high promontory they had the satisfaction of seeing their pursuers give up the chase and turn back toward their village. They had nothing to eat for three long days and nights but a partially devoured squirrel from which they had frightened a hawk, and on the night of the third day after the Indians had relinquished the pursuit, they ventured to the river, where they were fortunate enough the next day to see a flat-boat with white men in it descending the stream, who, on being hailed, took them aboard, set them across the mouth of Sandy, and furnished them with a sufficiency of bread and dried venison to last them two weeks, and a blanket each, in which time they expected to make their way back to one of the settlements on the Clinch. They took their course up Sandy on the same trail they had gone down some months before, but in one of the rapid and dangerous crossings of that stream, they lost all their provisions as well as blankets. This, though a great calamity, did not discourage them, but pushing on, with the blessings of kindred, friends and home in view, they found their way through Pound Gap (10) and reached Guess' Station about the middle of September, having been on the journey about a month, after encountering hardships and dangers under which many of the sterner sex of the present day would give way. (1) A seldom used name for Blackmore's Fort (2) The present Dungannon in Scott Co., VA (3) Cedar trees still grow on the precipe today (4) The Grays were early settlers on the Clinch River (5) David Cox settled at the mouth of Stoney Creek where he died February 28, 1828, aged about 80 years. (6) Thought to be the daughter of James Alley, Sr., who along with his brother, James, lived in that area. (7) An early name for Coeburn, VA. The writer has been unable to find any data on this Station and the above remark is the only known source that gives in inkling that it was manned for defense. The log remains and chimney stones were still on the spot in 1838, but the purpose of this station is unknown, as is the name of the builder, and for whom it was named. The fort was in operation in 1780. (8) The Breaks, now the Breaks Interstate Park, was one of the familiar warpaths used by the Shawnee Indians in attacking the Clinch settlements. (9) Sol Mullins was an early settlers in now Dickenson Co., VA convicted for counterfeiting coins. (10) The pass through Cumberland Mountain from Wise Co., VA, into Letcher Co., KY and in frontier days a well known Indian war path. The earliest name for it was "Sounding Gap." ______________________________________________________________________ USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material. Notes for DODDRIDGE ALLEY: Transcript of a letter from Doddridge Alley's youngest son, Stephen, to a Mr. English, who collected material on early Indiana legislators. The letter is in the Archives of the Indiana Historical Society. "Doddridge Alley the subject of this sketch was born first day of Nov 1788 in Scott Co Virginia and remained in his native land untill he was 21 years of age and married Miss Jane Philips. In the course of a year Mr. Alley his wife Father and Mother Brothers Sisters and some other friends thought they would emigrate to Indiana and grow up with the country. After the harvest in the year 1810 commenced preparation to start west. 2 large canoes 50 feet long was lashed together for a boat the women and children with what few household goods they possessed was towed away on the rude boat they had constructed started for their new home in the west some of the more feeble of the Males accompanied the women on the water craft the ballance of the men with a few horses and cows started by land with provisions and some clothing lashed on pack saddles rode through arriving on the banks of the Ohio where Cincinnati now stands Mrs. Alley was taken sick and brought forth their first son the first day of Nov 1810 After remaining there for two weeks started for Franklin Co and arrived in safety and stopped 8 miles west of Brookville where they settled The snow had fallen 10 inches deep the last of Nov. Early Indiana Trials and Sketches by Oliver Smith, U.S. Senator, pp 333-334. A PANTHER Many years ago, while our frontier counties were a wilderness, the settlers lived far apart. It had been whispered about in private circles, that some boys had seen a panther looking out of a hole in a big black-walnut tree. The story was doubted by many, still it was sufficiently alarming to induce settlers to prepare themselves with rifles and large packs of hounds. Among the settlers there was a man, for the sake of a name, I call Dodridge Alley, a neighborhood leader. He had often been elected captain of one side at log-rollings and corn-shuckings. Dodridge had one of the severest pack of hounds in the settlement, of which he often boasted, especially of old "Ring." The county in which Dodridge resided was entitled to a Representative in the State Legislature; a number of candidates brought themselves out, Dodridge among them. Doddridge believed strongly in love at first sight, and early marriages; he selected the idea of authorizing constables in their several townships to solemnize marriages, so as to tie the hymeneal knot, before the first love could have time to cool, while they were sending to town for the preacher. Dodridge had, no doubt, seen the first verse in "Love at first sight," but had not read the last. "Oh there's naught in the wide world like love at first sight. I've said it - I've sung it - and am I not right? Oh yes, and I'll prove it. I happened to note Last night on the river a beautiful boat. A maid sat within it - how paint what I feel; I saw here jet ringlets - I saw her profile! I knelt on the bank - I was wild with delight: Oh! there's naught in this wide world like love at first sight. "This morning I sought her - I state the case; She rose to receive me - I saw her full face! She looked all the love that one eye can express, - She couldn't do more, and she didn't do less; And, oh, when I called here, she limpingly came, Just as if, little darling! she hadn't been lame! Her ringlets were false, she was four feet in height; Oh there's naught in this wide world as love at first sight." The contest was very close, but Dodridge triumphed, the session of the Legislature was approaching, a new suit of clothes would be needed, the yarn was spun, the cloth wove, and colored with butternut bark, a kind of yellowish brown. The neighboring tailor had cut and made the suit, coat, vest and pantaloons; they hung in folds upon him, but still he looked pretty well, and felt right comfortable, as the blood had free circulation. All things were ready for his departure for the capital; business required him to go to one of the upper settlements. He dressed up in his fine new butter-nut suit for the first time, promising to be back by supper. Time passed on and no Dodridge. His lady became uneasy, the story of the panther came fresh in her mind, the clock struck ten, still no Dodridge. The dogs had not been seen for an hour before dark. Hark! the sound of the hounds are heard in the distant forest. A panther, no doubt. Night wore away, the morning dawned, no Dodridge. The lady left the cabin, and directed her course through the woods by the distant baying. The spot is reached at last; there perched on a leaning tree, some fifty feet up, sat Dodridge in his butter-nut suit, the very image of a panther, old Ring tearing the bark from the root of the tree, the rest of the pack baying at the top of their lungs. A word from the well-known voice of their mistress was enough, Dodridge came down, old Ring took the lead for home, and away went the whole pack, leaving Dodridge and his rescuer to walk home together, deadly enemies to butter-nut bark, while there were panthers in the woods. A HYMN IN THE LEGISLATURE Weeks afterward, Dodridge arises in the Legislature. "Mr. Speaker, I hold in my hand a bill to authorize constables to solemnize marriage; it is laid off into sections of four lines." A member I call Hugh Barnes, with a powerful sing-song voice, "I am opposed, Mr. Speaker, to that bill; marriage is a solemn thing, it ought never to be entered into without the greatest deliberation, and the maturest reflection. Why all this haste to tie the knot. Constables ought to have nothing to do with it, except when they get married themselves." As the speaker progressed, he became more and more animated; his voice rose to its highest tones, not like Old Hundred. As he closed, all eyes were on Dodridge; the speech sounded very much like the funeral services of the bill, and Dodridge looked like chief mourner. Dodridge sprang to his feet as quick as thought: "Mr. Speaker, would it be in order now to sing a hymn?" The speaker hesitated, the House roared, the triumph of Dodridge was complete, the session closed, the bill was left for the next Legislature. Dodridge returned home, the hounds were disposed of, and there was never an ounce of butter-nut bark used for dyeing purposes in the family Dodridge afterward. Indianapolis News February 14, 1962 “It would be an understatement to say Doddridge Alley was a picturesque pioneer. That rock-ribbed Democrat left his indelible mark on the lore of Decatur County, to which he migrated about 1822 and where he lived the rest of his life. He died in 1869 and he and his wife – who died five years later—and at least three of their six children were buried in a massive tomb he build 15 years before his death of native limestone about a mile northeast of Milford. Doddridge was the county’s first sheriff. Twice he was elected to the State Legislature but was defeated several years later. For at least 50 years he was one of the most active and influential political figures in that locality. Doddridge was hated and adored by residents of the Milford locality. He boasted of being an atheist. A native of Virginia, he was a Southern sympathizer during the Civil War but, owing to his advanced age, friends of the Union cause in that community did not molest him. Their forbearance on that score also may have been influenced by his far-flung charities which knew no party line. He was the most liberal-hearted man in the county. Each winter he provided food and clothing for many needy families, particularly during the Civil War when he cared for the wives and children of men who were away in the Union army. He was elected to the Legislature in 1826 and 1831. A Decatur County history says that following that first election he rode horseback to Indianapolis to assume his duties. When advised then that he was entitled to his seat he replied: ‘No! No! I thank you. I have been riding hard all night and I would rather stand.’ That same history then had this to say: ‘The clerk, accordingly, gave him the privilege’. In 1847 he again was the Democratic nominee for the Legislature but was defeated despite a spirited campaign. Smiley Fowler, Greensburg, recited this interesting lore about that campaign: In his walnut grove not far from where the tomb later was built he served a huge barbecue to promote his candidacy. It was thought that that feast was in part responsible for his loss because the cooks served the meat before it was well done. As a result many persons left with unfavorable impressions. His self-made tomb, which now has stood more than 108 years, is 20x28 feet. Its walls, 2 feet thick, rises 12 feet. It is topped by a monument 8 feet tall, making the top 25 feet above the ground. One early historian of Decatur County said Doddridge got the idea for his massive tomb from pictures and descriptions of tombs of the Pharaohs. Now the tomb, somewhat overgrown with underbrush, is accessible only by crossing private land since the road that led near it was abandoned some 42 years ago. In 1810 Doddridge migrated from his native Virginia to Franklin Co., Indiana. Then in 1822 he settled on an 80-acre tract in Decatur County. He expanded that to more than 600 acres.” More About DODDRIDGE ALLEY: Burial: 1868, D. Alley Farm, Indiana Miscellaneous: Had a stutter & was illiterate More About JANE PHILLIPS: Burial: 1874, D.
