Death Claims Mrs. Ben Porter
After an illness of several months, Mrs. Ben Porter, 75, passed away Sunday evening at her home on Fourth Street. Her husband had preceded her in death some months ago. Mrs. Porter was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church where funeral services were held Wednesday. Burial was made in the family cemetery in Martin County. The Porters came to Paintsville from Martin County approximately twenty-four years ago, making their home here continuously since that time. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Homer Robinson and Frank Porter of Inez and Paul and Mabel Porter, city. The Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

From the Big Sandy News abstracted by Cora Meek Newman, Eastern Kentucky Genealogical Society, 2000: April 22, 1888: McDonald Preston has purchased the greater part of A. P. Borders farm near Richardson including the brick house.

He owned a hotel in Richardson, KY for several years. It was located at the end of the line of the C & O Railroad which ran from the Big Sandy to Richardson, KY.

McDonald Preston, aged about 60 years, died suddenly last Friday morning and was buried in the yard not far from the house formerly occupied by Millard Garred near Richardson. Left wife, 2 daughters, and a son and a sister, Mrs. P. H. Vaughn.

Hartford never married. He died at the age of 24.

Hartford may have been a member of the Redmen Organization. In a picture of a burial at The McDonald Preston Cemetery, there is an organization present. John Ryan and Jarrett Peters of Louisa told me it was The Redmen. This picture was before John McDonald Preston passed away because he is in the picture. The men in the picture have several different designs of vests which I was told were for different ranks or grades in this organization. The Redmen are listed under Fraternal Societies as Improved Order of Redmen, Philadelphia, PA. Founded 1834. It was an organization similar to the Masons. (Per: Anna Ruth Akers Lycan)
