Randolph, waited two years to choose sides, stayed home and worked his farm, shortly after birth of his fifth child in 1863, Harm broke with most of his family and joined the Union Army. He spent some time in a Lexington KY Hospital for a broken leg and on 24 Dec 1864 mustered out of service at Catlettsburg. He returned home but was given the cold shoulder by his family and neighbors. Jim Vance told him that the Logan Wildcats would be paying him a visit. So Harmon hid out in a cave with his slave Pete bringing him provisions. The Guerillas traced Pete's footsteps through the snow and found Harmon, lame and suffering from lung fever and killed him. It is believed that Jim Vance did the actual killing but was never brought to trial.

In 1940 "Big Sam" said that he and his brother Paris were farming when Bill Staton rode up on a horse. Two girls were playing nearby. Per Sam, Bill Staton told him and the girls to step back and he then shot Paris and started pistol whipping. Sam then shot and killed Bill Staton.

  Notes for WILLIAM R. STATON:
William was a witness for his brother in law, Floyd Hatfield, during the famous “Hog Trial.” He was killed by Squirrel Huntin' Sam McCoy and Sam's brother Daniel Paris. A West Virginia jury lead by Valentine Hatfield found the McCoys not guilty and ruled it was self defense as the McCoy’s had claimed. It was said Devil Anse wanted the boys turned free.
