Descendants of Hezekiah Sellards

      3. Catherine Elizabeth4 Sellards (Hezekiah3, Peter John2, Peter John1) was born 1764 in Pennsylvania, and died 1833 in Lawrence Co., KY. She married John V. Borders I 1781 in Giles Co., VA. He was born Abt. 1756 in Hesse, Prussia, and died 1815 in Lawrence Co., KY.

Alternate/Nickname: Caty
Migrated to: 1806, Kentucky

Notes for John V. Borders I:
John served on the British side, under Cornwallis, during the American Revolution as a Hessian solider in the famous Tarleton's British Legion. His name appears on Captain John Rousselet's Muster Roll in February, 1781. He and his brother Michael were captured at Yorktown and John remained in prison for several months. One story says that he switched to the American side when he was not paid but it has not been substantiated. Another story was that when Cornwallis surrendered, after his release, John Borders was granted permission to stay in this country. He then migrated to Walkers Station where he met and married Catherine.

John was described as tall with strong heavy hands, courageous black eyes and a reservoir of steady courage. John fell ill and died at Tom's Creek, Kentucky while moving his family from Virginia to the Big Sandy Valley.

Per William Steve Borders, author of The Borders Family: "The only John Borders found so far in the forces who fought for the British at the Battle of Yorktown has been found listed in the British Legion commanded by Leutt Col Banastre Tarleton. These lists can be found in a book "Loyalist's in the Southern Campaign, Vol. II". The Loyalists were those Americans who sided with the British against the Rebels (or Our Side). This John Borders was listed as "died on 24 Oct 1781", but I & others believe that was a cover up to account for his absence in the list of Prisoners after the battle...a matter not uncommon amongst the military in a wartime situation.

John signed the request for the marriage bond for his son Michael Borders and Christina Pack:

To Mr. Mayo, Sur Giv of I request of you that youre ald grant me a pere of lisons fur Mikel Boders & Christenier Pack as have their noshen to joyn in matremony thus from humbel sarvent, Attest Thomas Wylie June the 28, 1809
