Paintsville Herald, Wednesday, 4 November 1953, Arrowpoints by Henry Arrowood

Maybe she was a relative of yours this little old lady pictured here. She was around Johnson County a long, long time, 107 years, we are told.

Katy Borders Brown should have remembered seeing George Washington if she had happened to be near the first President's abode because she must have been about four years old when Washington died in 1799.
Katy Borders Brown was my great, great grandmother. And perhaps yours too.

She was married before 1820 to one John Brown, of whom we know very little, except that he was said to have been an Irish soldier of fortune, considerably older than Katy, and it was rumored that he already possessed a wife and family i n Ireland.

John Brown and Katy were the parents of three sons and two daughters whose offspring have multiplied for nearly 150 years in Johnson and surrounding counties and far and wide, even into foreign lands. One granddaughter of Katy's is still around. She is Mrs. Katy Hinkle, who resides with her son, Walter Castle, and Mrs. Castle at Lowmansville. My information all comes from my own mother's memory of the family, plus a small amount of the family history contained in an old Bible in possession of my uncle Luther Daniel of River, KY. The Prestons, Chandlers, Wheelers, Fannins, Wileys, Brookses and goodness knows who else, are cousins of mine at the very least. And around election time especially, I find my kinfolk all over Johnson and Martin counties. But last August some sort of blight which killed off our chestnut timber some years ago, fell upon my family tree.

Three sons of my great, great grandparents, the Browns, were Arch, David K. and John J. Brown. Two daughters were Julia (Mrs. Andrew Body) and Fanny (Mrs. John Grimm). But to scamper out upon a single limb of this family tree we take David K. Brown, my great grandfather, and his good wife, Mary Jane Fannin. Through my gr4at grandmother I acquire such Paintsville cousins as Herman Wheeler and his sister, Nancy Wheeler Martin, and Hazel Fannin Chandler.

You see, great grandmother Mary Jane Fannin Brown was the aunt of Herman's and Nancy's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Fannin Wheeler, and Hazel's father, H. B. Fannin.

Oh yes, mother wanted me to tell you that Joe Fannin of Milo, Martin County, is another of our relatives. It seems that Joe's father, the widely-known United Baptist preacher, Monroe Fannin, was a son of Henry Fannin and Henry was a brother of my great grandmother, Mary Jane Fannin Brown. And the music goes round and round Oh, ho, oh, ho! And it comes out here.

Now the sons and daughters of David and Mary Jane Fannin Brown were Elijah Brown and Merida Brown, Mrs. Peter (Sena) Chandler, Mrs. George (Katy) Chandler, Mrs. Gil (Cindia) Preston, Mrs. George (Anne) Brooks, Mrs. Ham (Amanda) Wiley, and my grandmother, Mrs. Flem (Mary Jane) Daniel, F. Daniel and Merida (Bud) Wiley of Paintsville are cousins of mine too, and descendants of Katy Borders Brown, the little lady who was born while George Washington was yet around and possibly where he was President of the United States.
