New Zealand, and died 4 March 1914 in Coromandel, New Zealand. She married JOHN LOUDEN 13 November 1883 in Cormandel, New Zealand45. He was born 1 January 1849 in Scotland, and died 1904. Notes for JOHN LOUDEN: John and Mary bought a 7 acre section wher the present Auckland Town Hall stand. The land was very swampy and a small stream used to run from it down around Queen Street. They lived there for several years but when the Kauri Gum fields opened up at Keri Keri they sold their land for 5 pounds and shifted up to Keri Keri. Three of the sisters married three Preston brothers while up in the gum fields. When John Louden died Mary returned to Coromandel with family and sons Edward and Herbert got work in the gold mines until they shut down, then they shifted to Komata reefs and worked there in the mines for several years. They shifted then to Thames and worked there in the mines and Kauri bush. About 1906 Ted (Edward) and Herb (Herbert) hired a 4 wheeled coach with 4 horses to pull it and came to Coromandel from Komata for a fornights holiday. They returned for a visit with Vivian and four of her children. They left Coromandel at 4.00am arrived at Thames, changed horses and arrived at Komata at 9.00pm - 17 hours for what is now a 2 hour trip. The mining battery for crushing the stone for the gold went on day and night,Vivian complained about the noise keeping her awake all night and Mary said she would soon get used to it - when it stops at nigh that is when everyone wakes up. Notes for MABEL ROSE LOUDEN: Mabel had an intense dislike to the name Mabel and prefered to be call May. In her younger days Mabel was a big woman 14 stone, but in her sixties she was small and wrinked with slightly bowed legs. She dressed young for her age and was never seem in black or navy celinese dress the the older woman used to wear in those days. She was particular about her hair and every night would roll it up in pipe cleaners and put a scarf around it, then before getting into bed she would sprinkle a small amount of perfule or toilet water on the pillows and sheets to make them smell nice. Mabel would rise at 6.30 am so she could be washed and hair combed in tight curls with a hairnet to keep it tidy and have the fire going and breakfast over and done with by 8 o'clock. On washdays summer or winter she would rise at 5.00 am and go outside to boil the copper. Once the clothes had been boiled they were transferred into a large tin tub for rinsing and them put through the mangle into another tim tub for a final rincing in water which had been blued with a Reckitts blue bag. A final wring and the sheets etc would be blowing in the wind by 7.00 am. Mabel was a good cook and always had christmas cake and pudding pior to christmas , the pudding hanging from the ceiling having been made in September. She made great trifle, cake, buscuits and roast dinners. Her house was a half way house for the deliverymen who were always greeted by a cup of tea or lunch. She had a fine collection of cake plates and cups. Every afternoon between 2 and 3 pm Mabel would have a rest period. In winter she would heat a brick in the oven of the coal range and wrap it in old cloths to warm the beds. Mabels proodest possession was the piano, although she could not play a note. She kept it like new. She was particular about her curtains and always straightened them. More About MABEL ROSE LOUDEN: Burial: 16 June 1964, Totara Memorial Park, Thames. New Zealand. Notes for WALTER LOUDEN: Uncle Wally was a keen pig hunter and hung his pigs in the house. He had one funny eye, I don't remember if this was false or just funny one eye looked up and one looked down. More About WALTER LOUDEN: Burial: 4 June 1969, Totara Memorial Park, Thames. New Zealand. Public Lawn Blk 108 Plot 1469,70 Religion: Catholic Notes for MARGARET MAY WALSH: I spent much of my childhood staying with Aunty Mag and Uncle Wally. They owned a farm on the Tapu Coraglen Road, Esma and Jack Clark lived in the house and Aunty Mag and Uncle Wally lived in a shack by the creek. I was always a happy home, warm and inviting. The toilet was thru a hall that connected it to the house and I remember alway without fail you had to go in the night and would alway come face to face with a wild pig hanging in the hall. We spent hours swiming in the river out side the house, it had a nice deep hole, I can't remember it being cold but it must have been. Lawrence had a dauple grey horse call Bomb which we spent hours riding, he loved to brush us of in the pine tree. When they died they had one of the biggest funerals I have ever seen, the traffic streached for miles. After Uncle Wally died Aunty Mag move with Jack and Esma to the Karanaga Valley where Jack farmed for a number of years, I rememberJack with a stick man that he use to dance to music, Aunty Mag love playing the piano accordian and Jack would dance his stick man on strings. RICHARD LEPPER LOUDEN, b. 4 October 1900; d. April 1964, Thames Hospital, New Zealand aged 63 yrs. Notes for RICHARD LEPPER LOUDEN: Richard never married, he walked along with bow legs and a walking stick in a debonair way always with a big grin on his face and a little overfed terrier following. He was 5 foot tall. He used to sing a lot of old revue songs and when his dog died and they couldn't find him, Richard would argue that someone shot him , but when asked in an argument how he knew, roars of laughter rang out when he said " he found his wishbone in a pile of bones." He lived at Tararau (Thames) rest home after Mary became too old and died there many years later. Richard was seen to set fire to rolled up brown paper until it smouldered then he held it under his mothers nose to revive her from he Epileptic fits.
