He married (2) EUPHAMIE BOYTER 1 February 1822 in Kilrenny, Fife. Scotland. She was born 12 July 1795 in Cellardyke, Fife. Scotland, and died 6 July 1852 in Cellardyke, Fife. Scotland2. More About THOMAS SMITH: Occupation: Fisherman More About CHRISTIAN CUNNINGHAM: Baptism: 4 September 1791, Kilrenny, Fife. Scotland Burial: 5 March 1821, Kilrenny, Fife. Scotland Notes for EUPHAMIE BOYTER: From the Kirk Session Minutes. September 24 1819. Compeared voluntarily Euphame Boyter a young woman in Cellardyke and after being seriously admonished to tell the truth, confesses herself with child and accused Henry Beatt a young man in Cellardyke as the father of said child - that, after nearly two years correspondence, the guilt was committed in Cellardyke, about the end of February last under promise of marriage, so soon as he returned form Greenland and with this view she had endeavoured to have everything in readiness for marriage, But since his return, had, for reasons as yet explained, almost quite refrained her company, did not now know with certainty whether he meant to marry her, or not. To all which, she is ready to adhere, if confronted with him. The session after deliberation, strongly advised her, before proceeding father to learn, if possible, either by herself, or some trusty friend, what Henry Beatt intentions were, and report to the Minister. September 1819 The person appointed by Euphame Boyter to converse with Henry Beatt, having reported to the Minister, the said Henry Beatt, has refused all converstaion on the case of Euphame Boyter. The Minister had caused Henry Beatt to be cited to the Sederant. Henry Beatt being called, compeared and being admonished to tell the truth confessed his guilt with said Euphame Boyter but seemed unwilling to admit he was the father of the child with which she was prgnant and broadly stated that he did not believe she could tell certainly who the father of that child, for that her character (as he chose lightly to express himself) "was not worth speaking about", and denied that he ever promised marriage before, at time of guilt or since - yet perhapes might have married her, had not he learned at his return from Greenland, that he behaviour was otherwise questionable during his absence, but would not condescend on any particular instance of impropriety of conduct - that all advice as to marring Euphame Boyter was now in vane, for her was positively determined not to marry her, but assigned not reason. The Session considering the matter in all its bearings, with the insolent and determined conduct he had shown, resolved to defer pressing the matter farther, for a week or two, and them by way of farther trial to confront them. October 18 1819. The parties Henry Beatt and Euphame boyter having signifed a desire to be confronted, and being called compeared, and the minutes of former Sederants being read in their hearing, were separately asked whether they still adhered to heir former declarations. Henry Beatt obstinately refused to say one word for, or against his former declaration, and appeared still determined against marriage, Tho' he assigned no reason. Euphame Boyter adhered to her former declaration. The Session finding all advice tendered to them as to marriage, & rejected. They resolved to let the matter rest, and if Euphame Boyter considered herself defamed by Henry Beatt, extracts would be furnished to her, that she might have recourse against him before the proper court. July 1 1821 The Minister reported Henry Beatt still adverse to marriage, had called on him and signified his willingness to submit to discipline for fornication with Euphame Boyter, and a wish to be restored to Church Membership and therefore had warned him to attend this meeting - Henry Beatt being called, compeared, and after being put to mind of cetain degrading and defamatory expressions formerly dropt by him by the Session, against said Euphame Boyter - and that the Session were still doubtful, whether, after his lying so long quietly under scandal, his present application arose from sincere penitence and , was sharply reproved, and the method of a sinner's obtaining acceptance with God being pointed out to him, and recommended to his serious consideration, was dismissed for the present, and when it might be convenient for the Session to meet again, he would be warned to attend for further reproof and admonition. July 4 1821 Compeared Henry Beatt, pro 2nd and after being further reproved, and admonished, at considerable length, to beware of his words and actions in future, and to give evidence to the world of hearty repentance, by the regularity of his life and conversation, as becomes a Christian, was dismissed. October 27 1822. The Minister reported that Euphame Boyter "now married to another person" was willing to submit to censure but he was in some doubt whether she "had the heart-felt sorrow of a true penitent" as she had "quietly lain under the scandal" for "a long space". The Session were "willing to believe the best " so after a suitable reproof"she was dismissed for the present and "orded to attend the next Lord's Day for further admonition". November 3 1822 Euphame Boyth compeared, and after much serious exhortation as to exemplary walk and conversation in future, and the vaious duties incumbent on her in the rearing and nurturing the younf family now under her charge, was absolved form scandal, and restored to Church Membership.
