To many New Zealanders the name Forest Rangers is associated with Guerilla warfare during the Waikato War, 1963-64. There were may corps of rangers during the New Zealand Wars- Taranaki Bush Rangers, Patea Rangers, Opotiki Volunteer Ranges, Wanganui Bush Rangers and Wellington Rangers-but the most celbrated and notorious of these was the Forest Ranges, an elite corps of bush-roving scouts-the eyes of the army. James Cowan, like to romanticise, "There were the Forest Rangers, whose very name carries a flavour of adventure in the Dangerous Lands, suggests tales of scoting and skirmish and ambuscade, and bush marching and camping in wary silence". They enlisted originally by Lieutenant William Jackson at Papakura in August 1863, just prior to the Waikato War. Jackson and many of his commando-type soldiers (including George) became military settlers around Te Awamutu, Waikato. The men of the Forest Rangers (Also known as Jackson's Forest Rangers) were a collection of nationalities and occupations. There were bushmen, settlers, gold-diggers, sailors and professional soldiers, all young and self-reliant, ready for adventure. The Forest Rangers were accustomed to long periods of hardship in the bush, cut off from society and many times separated from other unites - operating independently in enemy territory. So when they touched on the fringes of civilisation, they were determined to find some relief from the drudgery of field work - and if allowed, usually pursued it till they ran out of money. The Forest Rangers are what are now know as SAS. George and Elizabeth ran a boarding house in Kawakawa and Alice Marie Preston was born there. Colinscamps and "Euston" were within the British lines before the British offensive of July 1916, and the cemetery was used as a front line burial ground during and after the unsuccessful attack on Serre on the 1st July. After the German retreat in March 1917 it was scarcely used, and twards the end of March 1918 it passed with Colincamps, into enemy hands, but that was the limit of the German advance. The line was held, and pushed forward, bu the New Zealand Division and the Cemetery was used again for burials in April and May 1918. The cemetery is particularly associated with three dates one of which is The German attack on the 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade trenches before Colincamps on the 5th of April 1918. Public Lawn Blk 76 Plot 1183 Occupation: 1926, Goverment Foreman/Gum Digger Religion: Presbyterian Notes for MABEL ROSE LOUDEN: Mabel had an intense dislike to the name Mabel and prefered to be call May. In her younger days Mabel was a big woman 14 stone, but in her sixties she was small and wrinked with slightly bowed legs. She dressed young for her age and was never seem in black or navy celinese dress the the older woman used to wear in those days. She was particular about her hair and every night would roll it up in pipe cleaners and put a scarf around it, then before getting into bed she would sprinkle a small amount of perfule or toilet water on the pillows and sheets to make them smell nice. Mabel would rise at 6.30 am so she could be washed and hair combed in tight curls with a hairnet to keep it tidy and have the fire going and breakfast over and done with by 8 o'clock. On washdays summer or winter she would rise at 5.00 am and go outside to boil the copper. Once the clothes had been boiled they were transferred into a large tin tub for rinsing and them put through the mangle into another tim tub for a final rincing in water which had been blued with a Reckitts blue bag. A final wring and the sheets etc would be blowing in the wind by 7.00 am. Mabel was a good cook and always had christmas cake and pudding pior to christmas , the pudding hanging from the ceiling having been made in September. She made great trifle, cake, buscuits and roast dinners. Her house was a half way house for the deliverymen who were always greeted by a cup of tea or lunch. She had a fine collection of cake plates and cups. Every afternoon between 2 and 3 pm Mabel would have a rest period. In winter she would heat a brick in the oven of the coal range and wrap it in old cloths to warm the beds. Mabels proodest possession was the piano, although she could not play a note. She kept it like new. She was particular about her curtains and always straightened them. More About MABEL ROSE LOUDEN: Burial: June 16, 1964, Totara Memorial Park, Thames. New Zealand. Notes for RAYMOND ERNEST FYFE: (As per email Merle Whipple) From Courier Newspaper 18 September 1981: Midwives who demanded their fee before the baby was born, a mother who hung herself because her daughter misbehaved, and prime farmland selling dirt cheap-but still no one could afford it...that was prewar Papatoetoe through the eyes of a local resident and retired Milkman. Two world wars and the depression did not stand in the way of duty for 76 year old, Mr Ray Fyfe, who moved from Whangarei to Papatoetoe in 1929. He had a Papatoetoe milk run for 50 years and remembers when butter cost 9d. "The milk came straight from the cow into a can and then it was delivered" said Mr Fyfe. "Mum (his wife), drove the cows, there were thirty of them. It was no 9-5 job, Mr Fyfe started his round at midnight and finished in the early hours of the morning. The cows were milked by hand-electricity was unheard of "There were windmills all over Papatoetoe before electricity" said Mr Fyfe. There was no drainage, all the waste went by Middlemore" he said. The lack of drainage caused the flooding of the present day Manakay city shopping centre site in 1935. "It was under water and I caught the biggest eel I ever caught". After suffering a stroke last year, Mr Fyfe cannot use his right hand, is partially blind and needs help to walk. He is not physically active but his mind works overtime. He recalls a Redoubt Road farm with the price of $1500. for thirty acres and a house. There were no takers. Those were the depression years. "There was no National Women's Hospital in those days" said Mr Fyfe. " I had to pay the midwife in advance when my wife had our son, but I couldn't afford the doctor's fees. I haven't paid it yet" Mr Fyfe saw the begining s of the Hunters Corner shopping centre in 1945. Four acres of land where George Courts is now, sold for $800. as did the South British Insurance site. "I've seen changes in local government in Papatoetoe. First we had a board, then a borough council and now a city council". "I paid 22 pounds for my section in the thirties" he said "I now pay over ten times that amount in rates". According to Mr Fyfe, all the land around the Bairds Road area was owned by a very rich woman, Mrs Baird. She donated a lot of land to a church. "Mrs Baird would turn over in her grave if she knew a brewery had been built there". More About RAYMOND FYFE and ETHEL STENDT: Marriage: March 05, 1929, Auckland. New Zealand vi.
