Murphey,
Gabriel, Va. res. in 1818, Clarissa, R7509

Although this source states that he is a resident of VA in 1818, his Will was probated in Claiborne Co, TN, 1818. Gabriel and Nancy Clarissa did live in Russell Co, VA at the time. Perhaps he was visiting his daughter in Claiborne Co, became ill and died there.
I am having doubts as to his date of birth in 1766. If this is indeed the case, he could have only served at the very end of the war.

.....there is a family story about Edmond Murphy, who lived in Logan Co. around 1820, 30 with his brother John. Here it is quote unquote from a cousin:

"...Edmond was supposedly a very large and strong man. This would explain his prowess for barefisted prizefighting. I know Richard was a big strong fellow. You'll see when I send the picture to you. There's an Edmond story about him bein attacked by a bear and killing it by punching it repeatedly in the head. There's also a story about him punching a cast iron frying pan and shattering it."

And here is another:

"Also, some more details on the death of Edmond. I confirmed with him that the story is that the guy Edmond was boxing died in the ring. There was a huge scuffle involving many people. Edmond was running to get away and as he was climbing a fence Joseph Staton caught him and stabbed him in the throat. The blood squirted onto the side of a house there. Years later Richard took Lon Sr (my grandfather) and showed him where it happened and the blood stain was still on the house. He also said that Edmond got in a fight one time, the guy ducked his punch and Edmond accidently knocked out a mule."

This fight took place in Pike Co. on election day. Edmond was a farmer and a boxer for his entire life.

Edmond must have been quite a character. I have found many "legends" associated with him. And several quotes from old timers that say that his father was "Edmond Sr." But the facts just don't pan out. Upon further investigation, Edmond's father was Gabriel Murphey who married Clarissa Herndon. I found a Russell Co. law document that proves this.

I have wondered if Edmond's boxing career, which I suspect was quite bloody, forced him to use an alias from time to time. Have researched those early
boxers and found that to be true.

Hello My Murphey Cyber Cousins,
Want to share this latest find with you!
Cyber Cuz Michael Murphy and I have been pondering the birth, death dates for Gabriel Jr. & Sr. for the last week or so. In an effort to find a death record for Sr., I decided to trace the migration for Elizabeth Murphey and Samuel Hopper. I suspected that Elizabeth was daughter of Gabriel Sr. and sibling to Gabriel Jr. Thought perhaps Gabriel Sr. migrated with one of his children somewhere.

Elizabeth and Samuel migrated to Claiborne Co. TN. Upon searching the Claiborne Co. genweb site, I came across a link to a site call "Pioneers of Claiborne Co."

Faith and Beghorra--listed among the early settlers were Elizabeth Murphey, Samuel Hopper and two Gabriel Murpheys. One who dies in 1808 and another born in 1766 and died in 1818/19 married to Clarey Herndon.

The information was compiled by a genealogist of the Claiborne area and published in a newspaper in the 80's. I emailed the kind souls who have indexed all these pioneers and requested more information.

I am sending you what was sent to me. A listing of all the children of Gabriel Sr., including some spouses and descendents. The information did come with a disclaimer that it is unproven.

There may be a number of you who already have it, but to me it was very exciting to find!

Perhaps this will help us to get "connected" with the other descendents of this family.

Yours,
Stacey Murphy Wilner
