Notes for Luther Jones Prevatt: Luther was the youngest of E.K. and Lula Prevatt's children. He left the tobacco farm when he got out of school and went to Charlotte, NC. He stayed with William Ira and Lula Prevatte for a while as he looked for work. Work during the last of the depression days was not easy to come by for a farm boy. He soon saw the futility of that and joined the C.C.C. (a government organization furnishing labor for government contractors) . Luther worked on the National Park (Uwharry Mountain). Later, he looked into the military life and joined the U.S. Marines in 1940. He was a Private when WWII began (Dec. 7, 1941). Soon he was sent overseas to Australia and then the invasion of Guadalcanal. In a later Pacific battle, Luther was wounded by a Japanese Bullet in his leg. The bullet was never removed. Luther reached the rank of Sargent during his service. He stayed in the Marines after the war and was sent to North Korea when that conflict began in 1950. During the winter battles of early 1951, Luther was wounded by a Chinese motar explosion. He was shipped back to the U.S. to the Naval Hospital at Corvalis, Oregon. He married while there and while on recuperative duty in CA he traveled back up to Oregon to see his wife. An automobile accident took Luther's life on May 10, 1951. Much of this information was told by myself, W.E. Prevatt, Lula Prevatte, Vada Prevatte and Maggie Prevatte. Lula Prevatte, William Ira Prevatte, Dink (myself), Peggy and Patricia had first hand knowledge of much of Luther's activities both in service and out because of him living with us and corresponding with us during the war. |
