William1 GREER [4474], born abt 1805 in probably Tennessee; died probably between 1870 and 1880 in White County, Arkansas, son of Elijah GREER [3889] and Mary ACORS [3890]. He married in May 1838 in Tennessee Tempy (---) [5771]. Notes for William GREER In the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Census records, the place of birth for William Greer is listed as South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama, in that order. Other researchers have reported the first wife of William as Lucinda Gray, thought to be a sister of a Tempy Brown; but after much research it is believed that this Lucinda Gray married William Grice on 7 July 1831 in Pike County, Georgia. (Genealogy records of the Gray, Grice, Greer families are filed in the archived records of Bertie Greer O'Quin) It is further believed that William was married before Tempy because the first three children are too old for Tempy to be the mother. Thus far, no other wife of William has been located. William Greer divorced Tempy Greer in White County, Arkansas on 14 January 1861, after almost 30 years of marriage; but the records are recorded in book labeled 1857 - 1859. The divorce records state William and Tempy were married in May 1838 in Tennessee. (This is Mary C) William Greer is listed on the tax rolls for T7N, R9W for the E 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of section 30 for the years 1860 and 1865. He was also listed with the E 1/2 of the NE 1/2 of the NE of the same section for 1860. D. Greer bought the same piece of the SE 1/4 from W R Thompson in 1881. (It may have been lost temporarily for taxes or a loan) This property is today in the Coffee Township. Marshall Township, known to be the home of William, is just west of the Coffee Township location. William Greer sold 10 acres in SE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of section 19 which property is 1/2 mile NW for the property listed above. This was in 1867. Ozias is listed with 80 acres about 1/4 mile South of this property in 1869. This property adjoins the property on the west side of that listed for William Greer in 1860. In 1870, his age was given as 60; however in the 1850 and 1860 Census records, his birthdate would have been 1805, making him 65 years of age in 1870; it is believed that he died between the 1870 and 1880 Census, and is probably buried in White County, Arkansas. A marriage date of May 1838, in Tennessee for William Greer and Tempy (?) is stated in the divorce papers of 14 January 1861. No record of a marriage in Tennesse has been located.. Greer, on his Confederate military Company Muster Rolls served from March and April 1863 as a private in Company A, Glenn's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry. This card shows he enlisted 2 October 1862 at Camp Hope, Arkansas by J. M. Davis for a period of 3 years. He was transfered to Company B, Glenns Regiment on 4 March 1863 by order of J E Glenn. On the second card, he is shown as "present" for the time period listed immediately above. Greer, of the village of Romance, County of White and State of Arkansas, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament. FIRST, all my debts and funeral expenses shall be first duly paid. SECOND, I give and devise all the rest residue and remainder of my estate both real and personal to my children, Tomie, Bertie, and Omer, to have and to hold to these my said children and to their heirs and assigns forever. THIRD, I nominate and appoint my brother W. H. Greer and my sister Vinece Leggett, to be the Executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills and testaments made by me, who shall give staple bond as required by law for the trust reposed in them. I furthermore bind and require that my executors to handle this my estate as follows. First all my real estate shall be rented and not sold until the youngest child becomes of age, and the rent shall be placed in reserve fund for the daily support of said children. Second, all of the personal property consisting of notes, moneys, or whatever else, shall be handled as herein set forth; first collect one thousand dollars out of my personal property, and list of which is attached to this will and which I shall revise and attach each year till death if possible. This Thousand dollars or as much thereof as is necessary for the support of the children for the first year or two, and shall be called the reserve fund, such fund shall be kept up to this amount each year by the addition of the rents and interest of my other property. Second; you shall collect out of my personal property One Thousand dollars and place same in some good bank, this shall be the emergency fund and shall not be drawn out only in case of emergency, but shall be placed as a saving fund interest of which be added to the principle and so on each year. Third; The rest of my personal property shall be collected and located out at interest on real estate from two to five years or as allowed by law, and interest shall be payable annually with attorneys fees added in case of foreclosure, no loan to be made for over one third value of land, and all papers drawn by a good lawyer, fee for which party shall pay who gets the loan; all land must have a good abstract title on same first Mortgage. FOURTH: It is my will that the children shall be kept together if possible and sent to some good school at least eight months of each year, if my sister Venice Leggett can keep them it is best with her I think, but if not they shall be gotton a home the best you can get, and the parties keeping them shall be well paid for their trouble of keeping them and they shall at all times be comfortably clothed and seen after the main thing is a good home and send them to school, after they get to the age and grade that they should go in the high schools if the interest and rents is not sufficient you shall draw on the emergency fund. FIFTH - As each child becomes of age it shall receive one third of its part of the estate and shall receive one third each year thereafter until it gets its part, and in case of the death of one the others shall receive its share divided equally.
