Cummings II": Three brothers, Simon, John, and Malachi Cummings emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland, to Faquier Co, VA, in 1759. Records show that they owned adjoining plantations in Virginia. Malachi married Verlinda Taylor in 1761 and they had a son, Joseph Cummings, born in 1762 in Virginia. Joseph served as a private, with the Virginia Troop, in the Revolutionary War. He was granted pension #1659 in 1833 for his service in this war. Same reference, page 226-227: Malachi Cummings was born in Glascow, Scotland in 1744. In or about 1760 he, with his brothers Simon and John, immigrated into Fauquier County, VA where each one operated a plantation. In 1761, Malachi married a lady named Verlinder Taylor. They were the forebearers of thousands of American citizens. He married Martha Denney, with whom he had ten children. Burrell Cummings was a lawyer and a farmer. At different times he served as Van Buren County deputy sheriff, sheriff, circuit court clerk, county judge, trustee of York Academy and borad member of Burritt College. He was shown to own 175 acres of land in the 1840 Van Buren County tax list, and he was deeded the land on which Cummingsville Chapel is situated. William Burrell Cummings died on October 23, 1884, and is buried in the Cummingsville Cemetery in Van Buren County. The genealogical file of the Cummings family in the papers of the late Thomas J. Barnes mentions Burrell and his brother Joseph Jr. as two of the greatest peace advocates and civic workers ever to have lived in that community. Betty married Gabriel Penn Cummings around 1832-1833, most likely in White County, Tennessee. He was born 24 apr 1813 in White County, Tennessee, a son of Joseph and Rosannah Colyer (Seilers) Cummings. After their marriage, they resided in White County, Tennessee, south of the Caney Fork River, in a part that in 1840 became Van Buren County, Tennessee. Gabriel Penn Cummings was one of many men who signed the petition to form Van Buren County, Tennessee 25 Jan 1839. He became very influential in government and educational affairs in Van Buren County, Tennessee. In May of 1840, he was the first elected constable for district 2 and was one of 322 white males over 21 enumerated for Van Buren County, Tennessee in July 1841. Gabriel Penn Cummings and his brother-in-law, Finis Ewing Plumlee, were two of 26 men on the board to help establish Burritt College founded in 1848 in Spencer, Van Buren County, Tennessee. They resided in Van Buren County, Tennessee from its formation until about 1850. In 1850 he is listed as owning one slave. It appears that Gabriel Penn Cummings moved to WarrenCounty, Tennessee in late 1850 or early 1851. Gabriel Penn and Elizabeth had 12 children, but only the names of 10 are known; two died young.
