W.S. Murray of Fannin (formerly Union) Co., Ga., died in 1877 & is buried at the old Sugar Hill-Salem no. 1 cemetery. It's hard to tell if this is a tinted photo or a chalk drawing. I tend to think it's a pale, pale photo, touched up by a heavy-handed photographer/artist. It seems lacking in the visual detail that artists render from live models. It looks as if someone laid flat washes of color over the details underneath, disregarding shadows and highlights that should have curved around the contours of the head and neck; but I may be wrong.
