This wonderful photo shows Nancy with Elias & Jane (her offspring) on a farm northeast of Elgin, Okla. in 1916. Nancy is the widow of Winfield Scott Murray of Union Co., Ga.

This mysterious & romantic image reminds me of a dreamscape or the fragment of a memory... The woman is Mary Smith Gray. And though this faded old photograph shows little about how she looked, it is symbolic of the era and the life of Sand Mountain, Alabama, in the early 20th century.

This tinted photo may be the only picture in existence of Mattie Wigley Cooper, my great-grandmother. She died when grandmother was a baby. The original of this is one large photo of them as a couple. Here, I have combined two closeups to improve the focus.

Mary "Dove" (Pritchett) Carter showed me this picture of Nancy. When Dove was a tiny girl, she wanted to run away to join Nancy in Oklahoma ~ she missed her grandmama!

- Cleo (Colvin) Cooper of Jackson County, Alabama (74 KB)
Cleo was the 2nd wife of Issac Cooper and beloved stepmother of Rosie, Pearl & Sallie. This closeup hung on the wall in grandmother's home, next to the photo of her other mother, Mattie Wigley Cooper, who died young. Through the years, when grandmother would point to either photo, she would say, "That's my mother." As a child, I was puzzled that the two photos showed no likeness to each other. I was grown before I understood who Cleo was. Grandmother told me then, "Cleo was my stepmother, but I loved her like my mother. I never knew my own mother. She died when I was a baby."

W.S. Murray of Fannin (formerly Union) Co., Ga., died in 1877 & is buried at the old Sugar Hill-Salem no. 1 cemetery. It's hard to tell if this is a tinted photo or a chalk drawing. I tend to think it's a pale, pale photo, touched up by a heavy-handed photographer/artist. It seems lacking in the visual detail that artists render from live models. It looks as if someone laid flat washes of color over the details underneath, disregarding shadows and highlights that should have curved around the contours of the head and neck; but I may be wrong.

Husband of Mary C. Emert; often listed as William H. Headrick. Lived in Tenn. & Murray Co., Ga. Photo came from Lois Headrick Cox, my father's cousin & was given her by Esther Headrick Pritchett, my Granny. Caption: "Grand father: William Mathew Headrick Died 1904. youngest Son is 94 years past. August 6, 1960. W.M. wife Mary Comings Emit. Mousouri. city. Stu" -- It is not known when he was in Missouri City, or what the significance of "Stu" (or "Stw") is.

Here's great-granddaddy as an old man, but still going strong. (L to R): Henry, Issac & Stanley Originally this was printed backwards, but I flipped it back to its original state, to correct Issac's fiddle playing--he was right-handed. Also, Stanley was misidentified as R.C. but my cousin, Mickey Henshaw, corrected my mistake.

Jane was the daughter of W.S. & Nancy (Petty) Murray. She never married. Was she was strong-spirited like her mother, or did she feel the shortage of eligible suitors after the Civil War? She would have been considered a "spinster" long before her move west.

Sarah Lou Murray, daughter of W.S. & Nancy (Petty) Murray, married Andrew G. Pullen. She died in 1897 & is buried at Sumach Presbyterian in Murray Co., Ga.

James Jefferson Gray with grandchildren, Ada Gray (baby) and Ruthie Bryant. (Their names are written in the margins of the picture). This is a Jackson County, Alabama family. The photo belonged to Alex Jefferson Bryant, Ruthie's brother.

I love the split-log fence & cabin or corn crib behind this couple--they're just like the ones you see in state parks. The details are fuzzy, I'm afraid. David Wesley Pritchett (son of Lewis, son of Jasper, Sr.) has little resemblance to so many other Pritchetts I've seen. He is stocky, and has a broad, probably ruddy face. Wife, Elizabeth, looks like a cross between Popeye & Granny Clampett--she has seen many years; but daughter, Sallie, is a beautiful young woman in the prime of her life. She stands proudly behind her parents.

Caption: March 28, 1910. Mrs. John Petty. Mae Petty - Mother; Jim Petty - son; Ethel Petty - daughter. This photo was sent to me by a cousin in Oklahoma. So far, I haven't identified this family group. I know that the children would be descendants of old Elijah Petty (d.1881 Fannin Co., Ga., married Letty Lewis & then Sallie Parker). I only have one Ethel in my file--she's too young to be the woman in this photo.

"Newt" Cooper, son of Peter, was born 15 May 1875. His wife, Judy Marie Wigley, was born October, 1880. They lived in Jackson Co., Ala. Pictured (L to R), front: Lee, Isaac & Pete; back: Mary, Mrs. Judy W. Cooper, baby Maudie & Mr. G.N. Cooper. This photo belonged to Sallie Cooper Bryant, Newt & Judy's niece twice over, as she was the daughter of Isaac Cooper and Mattie Jane Emaline Wigley.

- Daughters of old Elijah Petty (140 KB)
Five daughters of Elijah Petty (d.1881, Fannin Co., Ga.) are pictured here, but we've had some trouble identifying them. The two known are Mary "Polly" Petty (back, left) & Lettie "Toad" Petty (front, center); Lottie Johnson, Sarah West & Emily Cavender ("Shug"?) are all possibly shown here, but there have been mix-ups as to who's who. Nancy Petty Murray is not pictured, having moved off to Oklahoma. This photo was sent to me by her descendants there. If Syntha Mears is pictured, no one has identified her.

a.k.a. "Granny Blanchet." Mary was related to Charlie Bryant, who died 17 Dec 1937. She was probably his sister. She married James Marion Wigley and had Judy, Marion, Lee, Mattie & Juliana "Shug" Wigley. All of the children married Coopers. They resided in Jackson Co., Ala. Later, the widow Wigley married John Blancet. The Blancets adopted Wane Bryant b.1903 & Minnie Oiler (Oyler), probably relations of Mary.
- Little "Jethro" Burns with his famous mandolin (127 KB)
Kenneth "Jethro" Burns (of the comedy duo "Homer and Jethro") has been called a brilliant parodist & perhaps the world's greatest mandolin player. He is shown here as a young boy playing the mandolin for which he became so famous. H.J. "Happy" Burns (brother) is at his side on the guitar. Jethro, apparently, had not yet teamed up with "Homer." Jethro helped Chet Atkins get his start in country music. Happy helped Roger Miller.

Take one look at Nancy Murray & you'll know that she & women like her were the backbone of this country. Here, she is shown back in Georgia with grandchildren, Marvin & Arthur. "Aunt Jane's hat" hangs on the wall behind them. (Jane is her daughter). I think my favorite thing of all is that Arthur is holding a cat. Pets are rare in photos of this era. I would guess this to be about 1909-1911, since Marvin was born in July 1899.
