Notes for J
AMES PRIEST SR.:

James Priest Sr. is first found mentioned in Dorchester Records in 1637. He was the son of Abraham and Elizabeth ( Nuens ) Priest it is probable that James Sr. and Elizabeth were married not far from the date(1637)of his first land transaction, recorded in Dorchester Records. Dorchester Records, Vol. 29: The allotted land being 'Mannings Moore', date 2nd January, 1637. " Got 8 akers more" 3rd April, 1638. In 1651 Walter Hams made an attempt to obtain a portion of the above mentioned land. According to Suffolk Deeds, printed Volume 111, p, 356 ,Margery Staple of Weimouth in the County of Suffolk, widow for and in Consideration of three pounds sixe shillings unto James Priest of Weimouth aforesaid two parcells of upland by estimation concerning fifteen acres and a half more or less both which parcells of land are Scittuate and lying in the towne of Weimouth aforesaid. That is to say thirteen acres and half butting on Hingham line on the East and the Pen River on the West.........and ye other two acres of the aforesaid land butting on the Highway on the East and the lot of John Bricknell on the West...... this 10th day of January in Yeare one thousand sixe hundred fifty eight. A memorandum, ( date not now at hand) says that James was allowed 24 shillings for having meeting house swept and galleries kept clean for one year, on 19 January, 1674, James gave his son Joseph, one half of a house in Boston . He died in 1676 and his will, (Suffolk Probate #772),dated 4 March 1675 states " I give my lot of 24 akers lying in Waymouth woods butting on Hingham line to my son, Shadrack Thayer ( was actually a son-in- law ) as a debt me and to my beloved wife all my housing land and cattle that I have in Waymouth and what I have in a house at Boston that I now live in.
I appoint my beloved wife to be my whole and sole_____________and I appoint my son-in-law, Shadrack Thayer and Doron Thomas Dyar of Waymouth to oversee this my will to be fulfilled. I give all other goods that I have off Waymouth or at Boston, I give to my Wife."
According to Pope, in his Pioneers of Massachusetts pp 374, James's widow in her will dated 24 May 1676" beq.to son, Joseph Priest and his son, James, to daus. Hannah Rust, Elizabeth Hollis, Deliverance Thayer and Mary Turbifield, to son-in-law Richard Rust, to Sarah Bagley whom she had brought up from a child." Elizabeth died 29 May 1676.

  Notes for JOSEPH PRIEST:

Joseph went to Boston. He was born about 1645/6 and died in 1697. He seems to have been the one on whom James had to lean in his declining years. James Jr. whom he had declared to be the " Staff of his life,"suicided at Salem; Deleverance was the favorite daughter, her husband, Shadrack Thayer was counsellor for the family. Joseph Married Hannah Hagar in January 1674/5. She was born 21 November 1649 the daughter of William and Mary (Bemis) Hagar of Watertown and died 6 of may 1702.
Joseph received one half of his fathers house in Boston. In Suffolk County deeds vol.18, page 161 is the record ( May 20, 1698)of the deed(19 January 1674) to the house in Boston, and following it on p. 162 is a deed to the same property given by " Hannah Priest of Watertown and Relict of James Priest late Watertowne aforesd Potter Decd, Son of James late of Waymouth....also decd, JamesPriest, Joseph Priest and Hannah Priest of Watertown aforesd only children of the sd Joseph and Hannah Priest first named above." Know Yee, that wee the sd Hannah Priest the mother and James Priest, Joseph Priest, and HannahPriest the children, for... paid by Sarah Robes of Boston...(deed a) full halfe part of a dewelling house in Boston...all of which above granted premises was by Deed under the hand and seale of our Father and Grandfather the sd James Priest Decd bearing Date nineteenth Day of January 1674 settled and confirmed upon us... and wee the said Hannah Priest the mother and James Priest, Joseph Priest, and Hannah Priest the children for ourselves..." This was signed on 5 November 1697 by the mother and two sons, and acknowledged in Boston the same day ".

Bodge's " Soldiers in King Phillip's War " shows that Joseph Priest was with Capt. Daniel Henchman by 14 September 1675 and with Capt. William Tumer.
Soldiers in King Phillips War ( 1675-1767 ) were promised land grants. In the Massachusetts Archives, Vol 115, p.764, begins the original of such. " A List of the grantees for the Narragansett township No.2." On p. 765, under the town of Watertown are 26 names. The 12th line is. " Joseph Priest for his father Joseph." Narragansett Township No. 2 became Westminister, Mass.

This shows where Joseph (3 or Jr.) went to on leaving Boston.
