I have and am searching for information on the following surnames: Gregory, Price, Jackson, Moore, Palmer, Chapman in Washington Co. VA, Augusta Co. VA, Rockbridge Co. VA, Russell Co. VA, Randolph Co. NC and Wythe Co. VA. Some of the fondest memories of my childhood evolve around my Grandmother, Laura Gregory Price, I was her favorite and she made no “bones” about it. Whatever I done was just fine with her, she spoiled me and I enjoyed every minute of it. I will always remember her wood-burning cook stove, with the warming closet on top, which usually always had some leftover biscuits, which she would use to fix me a snack, more than likely it was “homemade” apple butter from apples grown in her orchard behind her house. In the fall of the year when it came time to kill hogs, I would watch the men as they butchered the hogs and late in the day they would take them “down” and start blocking them up to put in the smoke house. I knew one of the first things they did was to strip out the tenderloins, I would tell my Grandmother, “Grandma, I am hungry”, it never failed, she would holler out the back door and tell them to bring her a little piece of the tenderloin, that Paul was hungry, that makes my mouth water even now as I think back on that. I will never forget the “fried chicken” she fixed, fresh out of the back yard, if we could get chicken like that today the Col. would be out of business She was a feisty little woman who loved her family and kinfolk, who would often stop by for a visit. Nobody had better say or do anything against any of her kin, or else they would get a good scolding. I remember once she was attempting to get out of an automobile in front of her house and a young man who lived nearby came up on a tractor, he had an “wolf whistle” installed on the tractor which he blew, my Grandmother walked back to the tractor and threatened to “whup” him off of the tractor with her cane if he ever done that again. I remember the greetings, of “Aunt Laura”, “Cousin Laura” and the long talks that would follow. I learned to appreciate and respect the “old folk” who came and loved to listen to the stories they would tell. Now, I wish that I would have asked questions and wrote the answers down to share with the young ones coming on. My Grandmother fell and broke her hip about the time I was in the fourth grade at school and never walked again, it fell my duty to sit with her and wait on her after school and on Saturdays. I never questioned having to do this, even when the other boys were out playing and having a good time. She lived for about eight years after this and we spent many hours together, laughing and having a good time. It is due to my fond remembrance of my Grandmother that I have attempted to find out about her family. Laura Gregory’s father was Jacob Gregory, son of Benjamin Gregory and Joanna Palmer, her mother was Elizabeth Sturgeon, daughter of John and Nancy Sturgeon. Benjamin Gregory and Joanna Palmer were married Dec 21, 1818 in Monroe Co. VA (now WV), they are shown on the 1820 Augusta Co. VA census and from 1820 thru 1850 are shown on the Rockbridge Co. VA census, they moved to Washington Co. VA sometime after 1850, Benjamin Gregory died April 12, 1857 in Washington Co. VA. Joanna Palmer Gregory died Aug 7, 1873 in Washington Co. VA. Laura Gregory married Charley Price, son of George W. Price and Mary E. Chapman, Jan 14, 1893 in Washington Co. VA and had five sons, Harlow Price b. April 25, 1894, Vernie Price b. Aug 20, 1899, Eldron Price b. May 27, 1901, George W. Price b. Oct 19, 1904 and William Preston Price b. Oct 29, 1910. William Preston Price married Patsy Ruth Jackson, Sept 2, 1939 in Washington Co. VA. Patsy Ruth Jackson was the daughter of Sanford Leroy Jackson and Floye Mae Moore. I would be glad to share what information I have and would appreciate any information anyone could share with me.
