My grandfather was in the National Guard and served in Texas as a part of The Traynham Guards, who were sent there to guard against Pancho Villa. He was then stationed at Thicketty Creek Bridge, between Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties, SC, where my grandmother met him and would bring him water. He later served his country during WWI in France, in Co. D, 118th Infantry, 30th Division, a part of The Old Hickory Division, against the Germans. He finished his time as a rifle range instructor at Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1918. He joined the Police force of Laurens, SC, and became the Chief of Police in the late 1940's.
