"Indenture - Stringer to Allen. 'Indenture between Thomas Allen, cooper of Elizabeth City County and John Stringer, the son of Daniel Stringer of the same County, aged about 7 1/2 years old. I, Daniel Stringer bind my son John until he cometh to one and 20 years of age to the said Thomas Allen to learn him the trade of a cooper" and "I, the said Thomas Allen.....bind myself....to find the said John Stringer sufficient meat, drink, washing, and lodging during (this time) and at the end to pay to John Stringer a whole set of cooper's tools and a
good suit of clothes..." [No day or months] 1699. Signed: Daniel Stringer, Thomas Allen, John Stringer. Test Will. Latham, Mary Latham Rec:- -Oct. 1689 "I, the subscriber...assign... all rights and title of this indenture unto John Archer, cooper...he is obliged to perform all the articles of my part. of.." Dated: June 1690. Signed: Thomas Allen, John (X) Archer. Test: George Eland, Samuel Curle. P181 (96) on October 19, 1696, by his own consent, John was bound to Charles and Elizabeth Combs: John Stringer being now 15 years old is with his own consent bound an apprentice to Charles Combs and Elizabeth, his wife, until he be the age of 21 years, to learn the trade of Weaver, and that the expiration Charles Combs and Elizabeth his wife, shall allow the apprentice a Loom and a suit of Talklin (?) and one suit of apparel and find the apprentice meat, drink, clothing and lodging sufficient during this time. Last Will and testament of John Stringer of the county of Elizabeth City, sick and weak. To son John Stringer, stock, bed, and furniture and all pewter except two dishes and for plates given to son Daniel. To sister Elizabeth Weathersby corn, wheat, and Hogs for the use of my son John who is to remain with sister Weathersby until he is 16 "and his estate." To friend Michael Draper loom and weaving gear. To Daniel Stringer, all of the rest of the estate. Friend William Allen to be executor. Signed John Stringer (X) witness Fra. "Some information on Daniel Stringer and his descendants was provided by Robert Ogg. The following information is from the book "Christchurch Parish Register, Middlesex County, Virginia, 1853 -- 1812" by John Otto Yurechko. P. 107 Daniel Stringer, born Oct. 13, 1740, to Daniel and Hannah Stringer; p. 109 Elizabeth and Sarah, born July 5, 1742, to Daniel and Hannah Stringer; p. 112 Lucy, born Feb. 8,1744, to Daniel and Hannah Stringer; p. 114 Hannah, born Jan. 20 , 1746, to Daniel and Hannah Stringer; p. 233, William, born Sept. 20, 1750, to Daniel and Hannah Stringer; p. 188, birth of slaves: Peter, son of Jenny, a slave belonging to Daniel Stringer, born Nov. 7, 1740; a daughter, born to Daphne, a slave belonging to Daniel Stringer, born May 23, 1752. On May 7, 1738, Daniel and Hannah sold their land in Elizabeth City County to John Allen. (ECC Wills and Deeds.] From "Historic Homes of Middlesex County, Virginia" book: On page 125, Ellaslee, the home near church view . . . . In 1753, John Segar, Jr., sold to Daniel Stringer his "Messuage, Plantation, Tract" of 70 acres, which adjoined additional property owned by Stringer. A Messuage is defined as a house whose occupant controlled the use of the land and buildings pertaining to it, and it is assumed that Daniel Stringer bought the home of John Segar, Jr. In 1790, Daniel Stringer left to his son Daniel the Plantation where Stringer, Sr. lived and his brandy still, and that was the same year Daniel, Jr. and Mary Stringer conveyed the 196 acre estate to John Jesse of King and Queen County who had married Elizabeth Street in 1787."
