Notes for SR E
NOCH OSBORNE:
Enoch his father, Ephraim, and his brothers travelled to what is now Grayson County from North Carolina. (Perhaps with the Cox family) They built a Fort on the bank of the New River, between Bridle Creek and Saddle Creek. Defending against Indian raids was a priority. Enoch was later Captain of the 78th VA Militia and participated in the Revolutionary War. Prior to the war he fought hostile Indians on the Clinch Frontier during Lord Dunmore's War. Enoch was a Sergeant under the command of a Captain Looney, and Lieutenant Daniel Boone. Daniel's brother Israel was also in Captain Looney's group. Enoch was credited with giving Martin Gambill his plow horse after Gambill's mount collapsed on his famous ride to assemble militias in SW Virginia for what became the Battle of King's Mountain, the turning point of the Revolution. It is possible that Enoch fought in the Battle of King's Mountain, as well as the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. This is difficult to prove, or disprove, as many militia muster rolls for these battles were lost. Enoch was a prosperous farmer and land-owner thanks in part to several land grants. Enoch was a slave owner. He was a Justice of the Peace as well as a milita leader, and popular with his descendants as attested by all the Enoch Osborne's and Coxe's to follow.
