Obituary:

John Pugh, one of Bardolph's most respected pioneer citizens, passed peacefully away at his home in this place at midnight on Monday, last. The deceased had suffered for years from rheumatism. Some ten months ago other complications set in since which time he had been confined to his home. For many long weeks he sat in a chair day and night, being unable to lie down. A few weeks prior to his death dropsical troubles set in which added to his discomforts. Then his heart and lungs became involved, increasing his sufferings to the utmost degree. Through all of these afflictions he bore up cheerfully and patiently, and was never heard to complain or repine. He was conscious up to within a few hours of his death and passed out of this life gently and peacefully.

Funeral services will be conducted at the M. E. church in Bardolph on tomorrow, (Thursday) at 11 a.m. by Rev. J. C. Craine, pastor of that church, after which the remains will be interred in the Bardolph cemetery.

John Pugh was born May 30, 1833, near Tumbleson's Run, close by Fairview, (commonly known as Pughtown) in what is now known as Hancock Co., W.Va. He came to Illinois in the fall of 1856, locating near Vermont, and in 1858 removed to the neighborhood south of Bardolph, finally locating in Bardolph in 1865, where he resided until his death.

On Dec. 27, 1860 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Ellis, who died on Dec. 24, 1861. To this union was born a daughter, now Mrs. William J. Ellison, residing near Vermont. On March 20, 1864 he was again united in marriage with Rebecca J. Smith, who still survives him. To this union were born six children- Florence, now deceased, who was the wife of C.E.Falquet, Orry S., Elmazie, wife of John Bell, Jesse G., residing at Bushnell, John R. And James P., all except Jesse B. residing in this neighborhood. Seventeen grand children also survive him. Of the parental family one brother, Alex J., of Chester, W.Va., survives.

John Pugh served the public for many years as township clerk and also served several terms as police magistrate. He was a member of the A.O.U.W., leaving a benefit of $2,000 to his bereaved companion for her support in her declining years. John Pugh was a man of strict morals, kind and obliging as a neighbor and ever ready to help the sick and distressed and he died in the hope of a resurrection to a live of eternal bliss."
