My name is Jeff Pugh. My most distant ancestor is Lewis Pugh of what is now Hancock County, WV. Lewis can be found in the 1840 and 1850 Census for Beaver County, PA. In 1860 his family is in Hancock County, VA and by 1870 he has moved on to Greene County, IN. It is very possible that Lewis is somehow related to the Hugh Pugh line of Old Brooke County, VA. I have a few different theories and my data reflects the most promising scenario.
I have done quite a bit of work on the Pughs in the "Tri-State" area around Hancock County. There are at least six researchers that are working on the Hugh Pugh line and we have been sharing data and ideas about how all of these Pughs fit together. The Hugh Pugh line was not the only line present in and around Old Brook County in the early 1800's. This site contains a summary of the data that I have accumulated with the help of many. I would judge the information to be about 90% accurate. Not all of the relationships have been proven. Please contact me if you are interested in a particular relationship and I will share what I know.
I am also participating in the Pugh Surname DNA Project at FTDNA. We have representatives of pre-Revolutionary War Pugh patriarchs in the DNA project, including one from the Hugh Pugh line, one from the Daniel Pugh line of Butler County, PA, some from the James M. Pugh (b.c. 1665) of Chester County, PA line, many from the Lewis Pugh (b.c. 1674) of Richmond County, VA line, one from the Robert ap Hugh (b.c. 1670) of Philadelphia County, PA line and many others. My DNA is a close match with the representatives of the Hugh Pugh line, Daniel Pugh line and Robert ap Hugh line. That proves that these three lines are related and I likely belong to one of them.
We have already learned quite a bit through the DNA Project and we stand to learn much more. We do not yet have representatives from the Ellis Pugh or Hugh Pugh lines. We would also like to gain participants who descend from the branch of the James M. Pugh line that migrated westward across PA. Evan and John, the millers of Beaver County, PA were of the James M. Pugh line. Everyone is welcome to join the DNA Project and you can learn more about it through our discussion group in Yahoo called "Tracing Pugh Origins."
Please visit the Tracing Pugh Origins site in Yahoo by clicking on the link, below. We have over 60 members, all researching the various Pugh lines. Recent summaries of the DNA data can also be found there.
Thank you for your interest.
