* The Fittalls of New Zealand*

Updated November 7, 2010

Samuel Fittall born in London and emigrated to New Zealand in 1857 on the ship "Montmorency". He had a family of 7 children by his wife,Ellen Hooper, after their marriage in Nelson in 1864. Samuel was descended from Baptists in Kent and I am endeavouring to trace other Fittalls ( Fettells) in England or America. My grandfather was Samuel's eldest son, Edward, who travelled to England in 1881 via South America and then joined the Army in England, married in Calcutta, and died in Northern India in 1895.
There are many descendants of Samuel in New Zealand and another branch of the family of Fittall who emigrated from Kenya with whom I correspond. I met several members in England when I visited it in 1952-53. They were all living in the Greater London area but most Fittalls have originated in Kent and it is believed they came across the Channel from France, Belgium & Holland and the name was Fettell.
There are few men remaining however to carry on the name.
