James Ray Purcell, 69, a 42-year resident of Sterling Heights, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at William Beaumont Hospital, Troy. He was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Philpot, Ky.

Mr. Purcell retired in 1989 as a commercial and residential carpenter. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Betty Purcell (nee Roberts); daughter, Ethel (Sam) Madden of Sterling Heights; son, James D. (MaryAnn) of Oak Creek, Wis.; grandchildren, Carrie, Sam, Jeremy, Amy, Adam, Blake, Ashley, Heath and Holly; and great-grandchildren, Carlee and Cassidy. He was predeceased by his parents, John P. and Lillian R. Purcell.

A funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 8459 Hall Road, Utica. Macomb Daily Newspaper; Macomb, Michigan, Obit 4/10/2001.



Mrs. Lillie Purcell nee Basham, 76 of the Hillcrest Nursing Home, died at 11 p.m. Thursday at the Owensboro-Daviess Hospital, after several weeks of illness. She was born in Breckinridge Co., KY, Nov. 18, 1889, and had lived in Owensboro most of her life and was a member of the Hall Street Baptist Church.

Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. James Clark, & Mrs. Thelma Varble both of Owensboro, Mrs. C.L. Kelley & Mrs. Betty Allen, both of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. David Rowland of Warren, Mich., Mrs. Junius Marrett of Henderson; five sons, Martin Purcell of Owensboro, Allen Purcell, Ekron, KY., Robert, James & John Purcell, all of Detroit, Mich.; 24 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Rosie Basham, & two brothers, William & Lee Basham, all of Irvington. Burial at Providence Methodist Church Cemetery.
