Ed Marshall Putnam sealer of weights and measures of Haverhill, Massachusetts, for the past seven years, former alderman of the Haverhill City Council and a former Haverhill business man, died in the morning at 9 o'clock after a long illness.

He was educated in the public schools of Croyden and Newport, New Hampshire.

Whose work as sealer of weights and measures had received a great deal of commendation throughtout the city and had a large circle of friends.

He was in public eye for a number of years because of his work as sealer of weights and measures and because of his being elected as alderman in 1896. He had mentioned on several occasions for city marshall, prominent men becoming interested in his candidacy for the office because of the energetic manner in which he carried out the duties of his own department.

Was also a former meat market proprietor in this city and also a former real estate business man.

Was named office of sealer of weights and measures on November 16, 1919 by the city council.

Was the local agent of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, being named to that position in 1923.

At a early age he left Croydon to work for the Eastman Cattle Company of New York. He did not remain with this concern for a long period, moving to Lowell, Massachusetts, where his brother, Frank E., resided.

While resident of Lowell, he became interseted in the restaurant business and opened a restaurant with his brother, which they conducted until he moved to Haverhill in 1885, where he resided eber since.

When he first came to Haverhill, he became interested in the Two-Hundred Meat Market, which he opened next to the post office, on the site of the past Morris Plan Company.

He sold out his interest in this and became affliated with another meat market business, known as Homan and Putnam. This firm conducted its business on the corner of Main and Water Streets, where the past United Cigar Store, and then the Elm Corner Market, and he retained his interest in the business.

He retired in the meat market business in 1910 and became interested in the real estate business that he continued for a period of approximately 10 years, retiring later to give his full to his office of sealer of weights and measures.

He was elected alderman in 1896 and served a two-year term being the commissioner of the street department.

He was member of Saggahew Lodge, A.F. and A.M.

These are the characteristics essential to best citizens. Such citizens are not numerous. The death of one is a serios loss to the community.
