Notes for J
ACOB HENRY SPANGLE:
The information that I have for Solomon and for Jacob are from mimeographed sheets that were in my mother's papers and also in papers that my cousin Eileen Lange Miller sent me. In one place it says "This information was provided by Mary Catherine Burton, Ethel M. Hoke and Ernest Spangle." The Ernest Spangle is probably my mother's brother.** I believe Ethel Hoke and Mary Catherine Burton (Evelyna Hazelwood's daughter) are still living. I think my cousin Eileen is still in touch with them. We have Solomon's date of birth as March 3, 1836. In the same papers, we have Jacob Henry Spangle, born Sept. 10, 1794 in Pennsylvania, died Aug. 15, 1868, married July 10, 1821. These papers also say that he and Sarah Salome Eby Spangle are buried in Stringtown Cemetery, also known as Buckles Cemetery in Kimmell, Noble Co., Indiana. My cousin Eileen lives in Elkhart, Indiana and has probably been to the cemetery. She has been researching our lines for years and is very careful about getting proofs. She has visited the house that Solomon built (it's still occupied; she knocked on the door and the couple who lived there were very gracious and gave her a tour) and the site of the school he built. Eileen also sent me photocopies of a handwritten family record of Jacob Henry Spangle and Sarah Salome Eby in what she believes to be Solomon's wife's (Mary Elizabeth Boos) handwriting. That gives the 1868 date of death for Jacob and 1836 date of birth for Solomon. There is also a photocopy from a book which may be the family Bible of Solomon and Mary Elizabeth. It gives Solomon date of birth as 1836. Eileen got it from Mary C. Burton. There is also a page of newspaper clippings of death notices, including Solomon's: died April 23, 1907, ...age 71 years,1 month and 20 days. He was born in Crawford county, Ohio. At the age of twelve with parents he moved to Noble County, Indiana, and Nov. 15, 1860 was married to Mary E. Boos. They moved to Morristown, Tennessee, in 1876, where they resided till his death ....Interment in Economy cemetery, two miles from town." (Morristown or Dandridge, Tennessee)

** The "Ernest Spangle" referred to was actually my great-grandaunt, ERNESTINE Spangle - not a "brother" to anyone, I fear. Her full name was Edna Ernestine Spangle and she was a sister to my
grandmother, Julia Nott Spangle. - Julia Brittain

One bit of information handed down from several different sources is that "our" original emigrant
ancestor was Jacob SPENGLER who arrived from Rotterdam in 1732/33 aboard the "Pink Mary". I have found the proof that he was on the ship (aged 16) but not the connection from him to Jacob William Spangle(r). Two other, younger Spenglers were also aboard the ship.
