Descendants of Theodorus Aebi (December 2008)

Generation No. 2

2. PETER2 EBY(2) (DURST (THEODORUS)1 AEBI(1)) was born 1690 in Canton Zurich, Switzerland, and died Bef. 05 May 1749 in Earl Twp., Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He married (1) ANNA MEYLIN Abt. 1719 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, daughter of MARTIN MEYLIN and ANNA RUTGEN. She was born Abt. 1699 in probably Zurich, Switerland, and died 1739 in Earl Twp., Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married (2) BARBARA GROFF 1740 in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, daughter of MARTIN GROFF. She was born Abt. 1719, and died Aft. 1794 in Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania.

Notes for P
ETER EBY(2):
Records indicate that Peter Eby(2), was born in ca. 1690, in Emmenthal, Berne, Switzerland, and although this is not documented, it seems to fit. He did not come to America in 1717, but came a few years later in 1719, where he is listed in Rupp's on page 438. His marriage to Anna Meylin, a daughter of Martin Meylin took place about 1720 and he had a family of at least seven children by his first marriage. His residence was in or near the house on the mill property where he was actively engaged as a miller. Anna Meylin seems to have passed away about 1739 as we know that in 1740 he took a second wife by the name of Barbara Groff, who was a daughter of Martin Groff.

The only one of the five sons of Durst Eby(1), to die testate that we found was Peter Eby(2), who made his Last Will on August 7, 1748, in the presence of Christian Eby(2), Henry Shaver and James Love. There is no exact date of Peter Eby(2)'s death, but we believe it was in the year 1750 and the he was almost certainly buried on the mill property with his father and brothers. We do know that on December 13, 1750, Barbara Ebey, widow of said Peter Eby(2), called late miller of Earl Twp., was already married to Dewalt Lichty. It appears that almost five years passed from the time of Peter Eby(2)'s death until the Letters of Affirmation were filed at the Lancaster Court House. On Dec. 11, 1754, Henry Shaver swore that he witnessed the writing of Peter Eby(2)'s Will and Christian Eby(2) also signed as a witness. Then on March 4, 1755, James Love swore to the fact that he witnessed the signing of the Will of Peter Ebey(2), of Earl Township.

The best list of children our research found for Peter Eby(2) was dated Jan 1, 1768, and is found in Deed 3G-731, which is a release to Benjamin Owen: by Christian Eby, Jacob Eby, Henry Eby, Peter Eby, Abraham Eby, Barbara Eby married to John Bender, Anne Eby married to John Heller, Dorst Eby, Martin Eby, and John Eby. It appears that Isaac Eby, another son of Peter Eby(2), was dead by the time this transaction took place.

The line of Peter Eby(2), has been greatly expanded since we have published out first two volumes. We have now given many new Eby lines to trace to in this section, as well as, the names of wives and clarification of dates. This is the first real assembly of this family in print are we are very proud of this achievement. Included in the assembly is the line of Andrew Eby, and Barbara, his wife, the progenitors of the Abee family in North Carolina. Groff (1978)

Records indicate that he was living in or near the house on the mill property, and that he was actively engaged as a miller. He was also naturalized as a British subject with his brother John Eby, on Oct. 14, 1729. - JE and MPB

3. GEORGE2 EBY(2) (DURST (THEODORUS)1 AEBI(1)) was born 1694 in Emmental, Berne, Switzerland, and died 27 Apr 1743 in Warwick Twp., Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married BARBARA NEFF Abt. 1733 in Earl Twp, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, daughter of HENRY NEFF. She was born 1715 in Switzerland, and died 1743 in Warwick Twp., Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Notes for G
EORGE EBY(2):
George Eby(2) was probably born about the year 1694, in Emmenthal, Berne, Switzerland. His records here begin in 1724, when he is mentioned on the 1724-1725 assessment for Conestoga Twp., along with is father Durst Eby(1), and his brothers John and Peter. He was surely living at home at the time of his father's death in 1727, and remained there until about 1732.

There is no doubt that he, as the rest of his brothers, was engaged in the milling trade, and since John Eby(2) and Peter Eby(2) , were operating a mill in Earl Township he decided to build his mill some distance away. He chose a place at the junction of Cocalico and Hammer Creeks which is today known as the village of Millway. We have read that his milling operation was underway by the year 1739.

According to family legend his wife was Barbara Neff and because of the many Neffs who were involved in his OCR's this is quite possible. His family was quite small by Eby standards. Since he passed away on April 27, 1743, we are not sure where he was buried. Intestate records for George Abie(2), start at the Orphans Court on 23 June 1743 and continue until the 1760's.

On Oct. 16, 1760, his son Christian Eby, received the land patent his father George Eby(2) had applied for. This patent was recorded in Deed RR-373. The court then ruled that his eldest son Christian was to hold the land and pay the other children, George Eby, John Eby, Barbara Eby, for their shares and also mother Barbara, who remarried to George Rodt (Roth and later presumably changed to Redland)

It seems remarkable to us that so many Eby historians completely missed George Eby(2), as a son of Durst Eby(1), when he and his heirs have generated so many documents to substantiate his existence. Ezra Eby and many other early historians do not even make a single mention of George Eby(2). Yet these very same historians seem to have written in great length on a David Eby who was supposed to be a son of Durst Eby(1). We have never found one single document to prove his existence.

The line of George Eby(2), as assembled and contained in this volume is our first attempt to give a listing of his descendants. It is strictly a preliminary listing, and may contain many inaccuracies and errors, but it is our best effort. While it is still a first try, it is based on primary documentation and so we do not think to too far from the truth. Our major change in this outline is for Johannes Eby, son of George Eby(2). We now have a totally different family outline for him and the children we list for him, we have now placed those formerly attributed to him under A2 Jacob Eby, in the family of JB4 Andreas Eby(2) - Groff Volume II/1

4. CHRISTIAN2 EBY(2) (DURST (THEODORUS)1 AEBI(1)) was born 12 Feb 1703/04 in probably Germany, and died 15 Sep 1756 in Hammer Creek, Warwick, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married ELIZABETH MAYER (MEYER?) 26 Apr 1730 in Earl Twp., Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She was born Abt. 1714 in probably Germany, and died 12 Dec 1787 in Warwick, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Notes for C
HRISTIAN EBY(2):
The fourth son of Theodorus Eby (1), named Christian Eby(2) was born in Switzerland, February 12, 1698. He was married to Elizabeth Meyer, a member of one of the families that immigrated to Theodorus(1). Christian (2) and his wife settled on Hammer Creek, in Elizabeth Twp., Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about three miles north of Lititz. "The History of the Eby Family" - Ezra E. Eby - 1889 pg. 4

By far the best reported son of Durst Eby(1), was Christian Eby(2), who was probably born in Germany on Feb. 12, 1704. This late date of birth also explains why his name does not appear on the early assessments for Conestoga Township with his father Durst Eby(1), and his brothers John Eby(2), Peter Eby(2), and George Eby(2). He married Elizabeth Mayer on April 26, 1730, and in 1754 he built a beautiful home located in Warwick Twp. and placed a plaque of stone over the front door with the inscription "Christian Ebi - Elisabetha".

Christian Eby(2), died on Sept. 15, 1756, at the age of 52, and was buried in the cemetery at the rear of his home on Hammer Creek. It was not until Sept. 2, 1760, that we first find him mentioned in the records of the Orphans Court. On September 24, 1760, the Orphans Court ruled that the mill and plantation was valued at 1400 pounds for the 249 acre property, and Christian Eby, son of Christian Eby(2), took the property at that value. The other children to sign to release this property were John Eby, Barbara Eby, Peter Eby, Anna Eby, Andreas Eby, George Eby, Elizabeth Eby, Samuel Eby and Michael Eby. (Michael Eby, lived in Delaware when he signed this release.)

The line of Christian Eby(2), has been refined in this volume with many new dates and the names of several of the wives. We have also corrected much of the information on Samuel Eby and Michael Eby, both sons of Christian Eby(2), which should clear up much of the mystery on their lines. We did more primary research on these two individuals and think that we have finally separated their documents from those children of the same names in the family of George Eby(2). Groff Vol. II/1

  Notes for BARBARA EBY(3):
I am not convinced that Barbara's husband Jacob Hershey is the same Jacob Hershey who married her sister Elizabeth. Since Jacob died in 1819 and Barbara in 1816, he would have had to divorce Elizabeth to marry Barbara, as Elizabeth didn't die until 1835.
