Notes for HENRY EBY(5): In 1852 he moved west to Stephenson County, Illinois He had a large family of children, but all are dead. He was a deacon in the church, a good man, and was respected and beloved by all. "The History of the Eby Family" - Ezra E. Eby - 1889 p. 114 Henry Eby and his wife Catharine Long lived in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. About 1854 Henry migrated to the Lena, Illinois area. He later moved on to Dallas Center, Iowa, where he and his wife Rachel are buried. - The Genealogy of Henry Baer by Willis N. Baer, PhD (1955) The book HENRY RHODES OF HILL VALLEY, Pennsylvania., AND DESCENDANTS 1773-1979 by Evelyn Rhodes Mikula has these Ebys in the index: Eby 10 Benjamin 13, 14 Enoch 118 Henry 13, 14, 24, 120 Lela 7, 96 Rachel, 24 Page 10 isn't particularly helpful in that it simply gives a 3-generation chart and says Rachel Rhodes (no dates) "m Eby." However, pages 13 and 14 have slightly more detail. The children of Catherine Giger and Henry Rhodes include (child 3) Rachel Rhodes, b 22 July 1804, d 19 Feb 1877, m. HENRY Eby d 26 July 1882; s/o Benjamin Eby. "Both bur Brethren cem. Dallas Center, Iowa. F R. gr. Ins. & census". Note on next page says the information is from Eby FAMILY found in Roy Estle Mem'l Library, Dallas Center, Iowa. "Henry Eby, the fourth son of Benjamin Eby was first married to Catherine Long and after her decease he was married to Rachel Rhodes. In 1852 he moved west to Stephenson Co., Illinois He had a largefamily of children but all are dead. He was a deacon in the Church, a good man was respected and beloved by all. He died in Stephenson Co., Illinois" Same page says 'The Genealogy of Henry Baer lists "one son" without names or dates for Henry and Rachel. This son is not found in census records, so it is thought he did not reach maturity. Henry's parents were Benjamin Eby and Salome Baer.' Also cites a letter from Clark Myers to the effect that Henry Eby drove from Germany Valley Pennsylvania in 1844 to Stephenson Co., Illinois "to spy out the land was no doubt the first Brother to enter Stephenson Co., He returned the same year with a good report." Book says that The History of Waddams Grove Church states that Henry and Rachel Eby came to Stephenson Co., Illinois from Pennsylvania "in a buggy and were received by letter into the Waddams Grove Church in 1853." Gravestone inscriptions for the two are given (Brethren Cemetery, Dallas Center Iowa.) Henry & Rachel, according to page 14, appear in the 1850 census of Shirley Twp, Huntingdon Co., Pennsylvania. Henry is 50, Rachel 45. Also in the household are Rachel Fleming age 9 and Jonathon Davis age 23. Page 24 tells of other Rhodes family connections (who also took a 2-week buggy trip from Pennsylvania to Illinois, who bought land from Rachel and Henry Eby in Jo Daviesss Co., Illinois near Lena, Illinois Page 96 deals with the family of Hans Arnold/Ehwalt Myer c1714, and the Eby name appears because LELA Eby was one of those researching the line. Page 118 is the beginning of FRANKLIN RHODES AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Franklin relates a story of a windstorm which blew the roof off his grade school when he was a first grader. The chimney came crashing down, but no bricks hit anyone. "...but Miss Turner our teacher held the door shut as was blowing and poaring down rain, in fact we was in water up to our ancles on the floor, one of the larger boys got to the door and opened it. Miss Turner took the lead of about a dozen of us, all are crying, started through the mud and water for the house of ENOCH Eby 60 rods east. I remember I fell down in the mud and got my little blue backed primer that I was holding all mud. We got to the Eby home and finally quieted down. In an hour or so the rain was over and Mr. Eby hitched his team to wagon and took us home...." (Not much genealogy, but a nice story.) I couldn't find the Eby reference on page 120, which is still Franklin Rhodes' autobiography. This stuff was interesting to me because, though these didn't seem to be MY Ebys (other than that Enoch Eby was a family friend) my Badgers and Shivelys also were in Huntingdon County Pennsylvania, and moved west to Stephenson Co., Illinois, then later to the Dallas Center Iowa area. I'm beginning to see that these Brethren families were friends and moved in groups. - Jan T KTompk7744@aol.com There are other Ebys buried in the same cemetery, but all were born after Henry and Rachel had died. |
