Notes for JOEL EBY(5):
He died in his 73rd year and his wife in her 86th year.They had a family of eighteen children, twelve sons and six daughters.The names of the other four sons and the daughters were not given to the writer. Mostly all of the 18 children of Joel Eby's family are dead.The writer has no information concerning the descendants of the survivors."The History of the Eby Family" - Ezra E. Eby - 1889 p. 112
Joel and his wife moved from Pennsylvania to the vicinity of Lena, Illinois around 1847.He continued in this area until his death in 1861.Because his children were difficult to identify, we have practically lost trace of living descendants- The Genealogy of Henry Baer by Willis N. Baer, PhD (1955)
In the 1860 census they are in Jo-Davies Co., Illinois - Joel(68), Elizabeth(67), George(44), David(33), Jesse(25), Joel(20), Elizabeth(12).The mother would have been 55 when Elizabeth was born. Doesn't seem to make sense. Shirley Wieling
Joel Eby, brother of Jacob - d. March 28, 1861 at age 68 yr. 11 mo. 22 da.[so b. Apr. 6, 1793]
1830 Dublin, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania
The 1830 census shows 3 boys, five and under; 1boy 5 - 10; 1 boy 10-15 and one boy 15-20.There is also one girl 10-15 and one girl 15 - 20.This would seem to show that they had been married at least 16 years by 1830 which puts their marriage date earlier than the 1818 shown in some sources.This would also allow for William to be born in 1816, not 1821.
1850 Ogle County, Illinois - Census - Buffalo Twp
The Phillip Eby (dob prob ca 1830) who married Catherine Coffman(1831-1878) of my interest was one of 16 children to Eby family living Keokuk Co. Birth order unknown.This info came to me from descendant of my Phillip and Catherine Coffman Eby line with no additional details.

Notes for GEORGE W. EBY(6): According to Brethren records he had a second wife by 1880: "History of the Waddams Grove Church," a Brethren ("Dunkard")congregation, published by the Brethren Publishing House at Elgin IL in1910: Is not living with parents in 1850 so could be married to Marie and the father of James W.and Amanda.If something happened to Maria, he could have moved home and then married Margaret and became then the father of Jessie B. and Anna.This would explain why he was home in 1860 but where were the children?Perhaps they were with Maria's parents??? Could this be the carpenter found in the Philadephia City Directory for 1890??? |
