Notes for G
EORGE EBEY(5):
Unlike his father, who pioneered in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois, George Ebey might be labeled the settler of the community pillar. Born in Dublin, Franklin County, Ohio, in 1811, he accompanied his father, George Ebey, to Illinois in 1828, "from whence our subject made several trips back to Ohio", according to a history of Illinois It was in Dublin that George married Matilda Kilpatrick, daughter of Robert and Jane McKibben Kilpatrick , in May 1832 and in Dublin that twin sons were born on July 4, 1833.

George and Matilda produced ten children, seven boys and three girls. Except for the twins, all were born in Winchester, Scott County, Illinois It was here that the young couple purchased a home, erected a pottery (a trade he learned from his brother-in-law), gradually worked into farming on 200 acres of land of exceeding fertility, lived for over a half a century.

Sometime before 1834, the Ebey brothers, always alert to the discovery of newer and perhaps even richer veins of clay, moved to Manchester in Scott County. Then in 1834, George Ebey struck such a vein in Winchester, a small village in the woods and hazel brush about fourteen miles from White Hall. he bought out the pottery establishment of Robert Harrison, and by 1870 he and his sons operated the most extensive pottery, firebrick, and drain-tile factory in the county. During these years George Ebey made a major contribution to the future development of the Illinois prairies. In 1855, experimenting on his own farm, he demonstrated that, with the use of drainage tile, he could convert wet and swampy regions into productive farmland and keep roads passable even during the wet seasons. The drainage of low prairie lands led to the virtual elimination of the 'ague" (malaria), which had been the great scourge of the early settlers.

George Ebey p. 18 - 20

George b Jan 1811 in Ohio came to Sangamon Co in 1828, married in Ohio in 1832 to Matilda Kirkpatrick. 3 sons in the Union army; one of them died in Battle at Pittsburg Landing. George Ebey was residing at Winchester Scott Co., Illinois at time of book. - History of the Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois

Census Place Winchester, Scott, Illinois

The following information appears on page 22 of the picture book "Great Scott! and the People Who Made it Great", by Vernon R. Q. FERNANDES, a joint venture of "The Winchester Times" and "The Jacksonville Journal-Courier"; Library of Congress Card Catalog number 96-079129; ISBN 0-9648573-1-6. There is no publication date listed, but I believe it was printed in about 1997.

The drawing on the top of the page is labeled "EARLY SCOTT TAKEN FROM 1873 ATLAS", and the caption below the photograph says "The Ebey Pottery". The caption below the two photographs at the bottom of the page says "Examples of the pottery produced by George Ebey."

The text in the middle of the page says, "There were many potteries operating in Scott County. The Ebeys were among the first and best and continued until at least 1890. In the spring of 1834, George Ebey, with a new wife, moved to Winchester. There, with Thomas Kilpatrick he bought the Robert Harrison pottery in the center of town. After a few years they moved one mile northeast of town and started producing stoneware. In 1855, George Ebey's fame grew as he experimented with drainage tile to convert wet and swampy tracts into productive farm land. Further, the tile kept wet roads passable. In the Civil War, Ebey rented out the business and sent thirteen men (sons, sons-in-laws, hired men, and apprentices) to fight for the Union cause."
