Notes for S
ARAH ELLEN WARREN:
Mrs. Sarah Waldo, 92, a pioneer of Dunn County in its early days, passed from life Jan. 10, 1943 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Hutchinson, (Rachel) , Ardmore, Oklahoma Burial took place Jan. 12. Sarah Warren came to Menomonie, Wisconsin. with her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Warren in 1860 from Port Hope, Canda. From girlhood she took active interest in all that pertained to the welfare of this community, socially or otherwise. She was a member of the Dunn Co., Fair Assoc. at the time it was organized. Also a valued member of the Old Settlers Society and the Unitarian churn in its early days. She was especially interested in the Order of Odd Fellows. She was affiliated with the Rebekah Lodge over 70 years. She was a member of Evergreen lodge of Menomonie at the time of her death. She was president of the Wisconsin Rebekah State Assembly for 17 years. She was one of a committee, that located the Odd Fellows Home at Green Bay. She was its first matron and superintendent, also on its board of directors. Sarah Warren married Charles Allen Hutchinson in 1873 and for some years lived on a farm near Spring Brook, Dunn Co., They were the parents of 3 children. After her husband's death in 1894 she married Charles E. Waldo in Omaha. They lived in Cannon City, Colorado He died July 13, 1924 and she moved to her daughter's home in Oklahoma For over five years she was confined to her bed, a helpless invalid. Before her health failed she returned to Menomonie many times to visit friends and relatives. Mrs. Waldo is survived by her daughter, (Rachel) Mrs. William Hutchinson; one son Byron, Waverly, Iowa. a step-daughter , Miss Kate Hutchinson, Elk Mound. One son William preceded her in death. She was the mother of C. B. Hutchinson.

The following was written by Edna Rachel Marie Hutchinson Clark and copied by David Clark from her original typewritten page. There was no date as to when she wrote it.

My grandmother Waldo (dad's mother) was a remarkable dynamic old lady. To me she was always old, nothing phased her, she could stand her ground with the best of them or even come out ahead. I believe she could have moved into the Whitehouse and been the President's right hand man, if not President herself.

She *divorced her husband, and had three children to support and care for. She applied for and got the position as first Matron of the Odd Fellows Home for orphans and old folks in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This enabled her to provide a home for her children. She wrote for the newspapers, she wrote poems and hymns many of which were published. She was an avid Rebekah and held State offices many times. It was at a National Rebekah and Odd Fellows convection that she met Judge Edward Waldo. It was "love at first sight". He lived in Colorado and she was from Wisconsin, but distance makes the heart grow fonder. Omaha was equal distance for both so they met there and were married (May 11, 1905). After a two days honeymoon the Judge returned to Colorado and grandma went home to Wisconsin to see her daughter graduate from Stout University, and to pack her household for shipment to Colorado. Time were much easier for her after she married the Judge.

After her husband died on July 13, 1924 she moved to Oklahoma to live with her daughter (Rachel), but her summers were spent in Iowa and Wisconsin. She traveled back and forth until her 89th year, after that she was never strong enough to make the trip again. She died at 96. My sister (Sally) and I were her only grandchildren and we learned early in life that "grandma" would come across for us if things failed at home. She was a great believer in ESP and practiced it. She could tell fortunes with cards and tea leaves. Judge Waldo was the only grandpa I ever knew. Both my natural grandfathers died in the 1880's. My grandfather Hutchinson was a "drummer" and traveled by train to take his orders. Automobiles were still just a dream. Mother's father also died in the 1800's at age 47. His name was Martin Werner. He was survived by his wife and ten children.

*This is the only time I have ever seen divorce mentioned in the life of Sarah Ellen Warren and Charles Allen Hutchinson. All other accounts state she married Judge Waldo after the death of her husband an nothing else. Charles A's Obituary states he died at the home of his son-in-law and make no mention of any survivors, so they may well have been divorced.

*Note by David Clark.

From Dunn Co., News, April 1, 1915 Hutchinson - Hutchinson
A wedding in which many Menomonie people will be much interested is that of Miss Rachel Hutchinson, formerly of this city, and William Hutchinson at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Charles E. Waldo, in Canon City, Col. Thursday, March 25. Mrs Hutchinson is a Dunn county girl, having spent her early years on a farm at Waneka, later living in the city until about eight years ago when she went west with her mother. The Daily Record of Canon City has the following account of the wedding: "Today in a pretty wedding at 1 p. m. Mis Rachel Hutchinson, a popular Canon City girl, became Mrs. William Hutchinson at the home of Judge and Mrs. Charles E. Waldo, 621 River street. "Rev. George F. Sevier of the Fist Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. H. H. Darling of Christ Episcopal Church, conducted the beautiful ring ceremony. The ritual was pronounced in the back parlor midst a bower of palms and ferns which completely hid the large bay window. "The nicely decorated home was filled with many friends and relatives of the Bride. Those from out of town were Mrs. Eliza Warren of Menomonie, Weis., an aunt of the bride, and Miss Margaret Osmond, a friend from Great Bend, Kas. "Judge Waldo gave away the bride, who wore a becoming brown silk traveling suit. Immediately after the wedding ceremony two large wedding cakes were cut and a light buffet luncheon was served. Soon afterwards the happy couple left for Denver, from which point they will set out on an extensive wedding journey, the itinerary of which is a mystery to all except themselves. After the honeymoon trip Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson will return to Canon City for a brief stay and will go to Ardmore, Oklahoma, where Mr. Hutchinson has prepared a pleasant home for the bride. "The marriage of this afternoon is the culmination of an acquaintance which began nine years ago at Silver Cliffe, where they met while the bride was spending the summer there and the bridegroom was looking after his law practice. "Mrs. Hutchinson is a splendid young lady of accomplishments and is well liked by all who know her. Since her residence in Canon City she has been prominently associated with the social activities of the community. "Mr. Hutchinson is one of the able lawyers of Ardmore, Oklahoma, his home.
