Frank S. Eby, a resident of Pleasanton, died June 22, 2004 in Pleasanton. A native of Missouri, Mr. Eby attended school in Kansas City, Missouri and was first employed there by the Great Lakes Pipe Line Co. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and attended navigation school at Hondo AAFB. After a tour as a flight instructor in navigation at Victorville AAFB he served as navigator/bombardier in a B-25 assigned to the 396th Bombardment Squadron in the Pacific Theater. After World War II he attended the University of Illinois, where he obtained a BS in Engineering Physics and Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics. He joined the pure-fusion energy research project at the University of California Radiation Laboratory in Livermore in 1954. Following the Soviet launch of Sputnik in 1957 he transferred to the Laboratory's fission-device design program. He worked in the "small weapons" program for more than 20 years, five years as program head. He was named Senior Scientist in 1972. After cessation of underground nuclear testing, he joined the Special Projects Division. At the conclusion of his work in that division in 1991, the Director of Central Intelligence awarded Eby the Intelligence Community Medallion.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Pleasanton, two daughters, Elizabeth Ebert of Melbourne, Australia and Susan Chism of Houston, Texas, a son, Carl Eby of Beaufort, South Carolina, and five grandchildren. At his request, memorial services will be held privately. Donations may be made to Hope Hospice of Dublin, 6500 Dublin Blvd., Dublin, CA 94568. ANCY VINSONHALER:
Nancy Vinsonhaler Eby, a former longtime Pleasanton resident, was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1935. She attended primary school in Cincinnati, Ohio and secondary school in Boston, Massachusetts, where she graduated from The Winsor School, made her debut in 1952 and joined the Junior League. She attended Mt. Holyoke College and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she graduated in 1956 with a degree in physics. She started her working career with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Co. in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1957 she moved to Livermore, where she was employed by the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (Rad Lab) in criticality safety studies of experimental devices being prepared for tests at the Pacific Proving Grounds. After marrying Frank Eby in 1958 she retired from the Lab and moved to Pleasanton, she became active in 4-H. She was interested in the secondary school system and served on numerous educational committees. She started volunteer work at the Foothill High School library in 1975, volunteering there for 34 years. She also volunteered at the Amador High School library from 1979 through 2001. She served on the Alameda County Library Commission for eleven years and volunteered at the Pleasanton Public Library from 1994 until it left the County system and later at the Dublin Public Library. She moved to Houston, Texas in 2007. She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Ebert of Melbourne Australia and Susan Chism of Houston, Texas and a son, Dr. Carl Eby of Beaufort, South Carolina and five grandchildren. Donations may be made to Hope Hospice.
