Notes for Eva Grace Catherine McKinney: Eva Grace McKinney was born August 20, 1891. Grace graduated form Northwestern University in 1914 with a degree in Music. She was a music teacher in Kuling, China from 1919 to 1922 for the children of American missionaries. On her return trip back to Indiana, she sailed on the Pyrus, as it was quite a long voyage (three months) she had time to meet up with a young sailor by the name of Hugh Griffith Quirk of Ireland. A shipboard romance ensued and love blossomed, by the end of the journey they were engaged. Griff had to finish his tour of duty after taking Grace home to meet his family. Grace's return home and her exciting news of a sailor falling in love with her and coming home to marry her was met with a bit of trepidation and skeptism by her stern father Frank. And sure enough on the appointed marriage date of March 10th, 1923 Griff failed to show up to marry his bride. However, he had been detained and could not get word to her that he was going to be late. He did arrive in a week and they were married on March 17th, 1923. This being St. Patrick's Day made it a great day for an Irishman to start his new life in America.
