Includes NotesNotes for Mary Ellen Miller:
Mary Ellen Miller was born November 26, 1854 in Bowne, Michigan (later name changed to Alto), came to Burlington to take music lessons at the Conservatory of Music. Her friend, Ella Curtis, a cousin of Mary Vinton's, got her to come to the Burlington Conservatory. They roomed together and also boarded with Aunt Elizabeth (McKinney) Vinton (daughter of PT McKinney and Sara McClure McKinney) Mother (Mary Ellen Miller) went to Will Logan's at Keithsburg, Illinois to teach music, because she was a very good friend of his sister Rilla Logan. Rilla took her to Indiana to the home of her Uncle James McClure and she started teaching music in the Newtown, Indiana community. She lived at Uncle James McClure's She and father(Charles R. McKinney) had a tristing place back in the woods between the two farms.(McClure and McKinney farms) Father had the first single buggy that Mary Vinton ever saw. She remembers how thrilled she was to see him hitch up his horse and drive off to have a date with his girl. Mary Vinton remembers going to church with father and the others. They would hitch up the farm wagon, put in a kitchen chair for each member of the family and away they went to church. In real cold winter weather they put a lot of straw in the bed of the wagon and each one wrapped a quilt around himself to keep warm.
