Mordecai McKinney (son of John Cullen McKinney and Mary Elizabeth MacDonald) was born Abt. 1685 in Strathredale, Isle of Skye, Scotland, and died May 20, 1760 in Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He married Marietje Sebring on 1713 in Bergen County, New Jersey, daughter of Jan Roelofson Sebring and Adrianna Polhemus.

MUNCY TOWNSHIP ASSESSMENT LIST FOR 1778.

The stirring events of the year now drawing to a close were a terrible set-back to the people of this valley, both in the development of wealth and increase of population. The assessment list of Muncy township for 1778, which has been preserved, shows the following taxables, as compared with the list for 1774: Mordecai McKinney, (two slaves,) Albert Polhemus

Mordecai's will is in the New Jersey State House, Trenton. There is an abstract of it in the New Jersey Archives, 32, 212. His will reads:

In the Name of God Amen the Seventeenth Day of November in the Thirty first Year of the Reign on Our Severiegn Lord George the Second over Great Britain I Gring Comoghorn One thousand Seven hundred and Fifty nine 1759. I Mordecai Ser McKinney of the Township of Lebanon in the County of Hunterdon and Province of West New Jersey being very weak of body but of Perfect mind and memory Thanks be Given unto God Wherefore Calling to mind the Mortality of my Body and Knowing that it is Appointed for all Men Once to Die DO make and ordain this my last will and Testament That is to Say Principally and first of all I Give and recommend my Soul into the hands of God that Gave it and for my Body I recommend it to the Earth to be Buried in a Christianlike and Decent manner at the Direction of my Executors nothing doubting but at the General Reserrection I shall receive the Same Again by the Mighty powers of God At Last Touching Sackreodely Revlede wherewith it hath pleased God to Clep me with this life I Give Devise and Dispose of the Same in the following manner and form. Imprimis It is my will and I do order that in the First place all my Just Debt and Fines are Charges be paid and Satisfied Memfreice that my Son John Shall have five Shillings Sterling for his Birthday as being my Oldest Son, also I will that the heirs of my son aforesaid Son John Shall have the Sum of One hundred and fifty pounds money at Eight Shillings and are to be paid by my Executors hereafter mentioned Out of my Estate That is to Say Ten Years after my Death without any Interest due thereon Item I will that my Grandson Mordecai the Son of my Son Daniel Shall have the Sum of fifty pounds money aforesaid to be paid to him when he shall come to the full are of Twenty One Years without any Interest money Due thereon And if my grandson Mordecai Dye before he Come of age the said fifty pounds to be paid to my Son Daniel if he be living Otherioays it Shall be Equally Divided between by four Children as follows my Son Jacob My Son David, My Son Mordecai, and my Daughter Ann Item I will that my Loving wife Mary Shall have One room in my Dwelling house as She Shall Choose for herSelf, Also Two Milch Cows One Horse or Mare or Mare During her Nacherall Life or During the Time She remains my widow, Also the Old Negro Wench to wait Upon her which Negro Wench is to hers her heirs and Assigns forever and also I will that at my Decease the Grain that Shall be then in the Ground and at the Barn Shall be my said Loving wife Marys. Also I Will that my said Wife Shall have all the Rent for her own Use and Maintenance of my Plantation or homestead during her nacherall Life or while She remains my Widow Also All the household Goods Shall be for her use during the time She remains my Widow And Further that whatever person or Persons Shall rent my plantation or Homestead Shall find my said Wife in Sufficient pasture and fodder for to keep a Cow and One Horse or Mare, and likewise they Shall provide for her a sufficient quantity of Firewood hal'd to her House During her Life or while She Remains my Widow. Then it is required and I do Order that my Negroes Fortune, Prince, Cuff, Sam, Sarah be all Sold at public vendue, as also all the Cattle and Horses Except for the Use of my wife, and the Sheep likewise, Excepting four which shall be for the Use of my wife during her natural Life or widowhood all which shall be Sold at public Vendue at my Decease And what these and Things above Mentioned Shall amount to be Equally divided between my son Jacob and his heirs and between my son David and his heirs and between my Daughter Ann and my son Mordecai Equal Share and Share alike, but if there be no heirs of my Son David and Ann then their parts Shall go to my Son Jacob and Mordecai and their heirs Item I will that my plantation or homestead Shall be Rented Out at my Decease and to be for the use above mentioned and at the Deceye of my said wife that my Plantation or Homestead with all my House hold goods Shall be Sold at public Vendue and the Amount thereof to be equally divided between my Son Jacob and my Son David My Daughter Ann and my Son Mordecai to them and their heirs, And if my Son David and Daughter Ann dye without heirs then their part Shall go to my Son Jacob and Mordecai to them and their heirs, which shall be all Share and Share alike, Item I will that my Lott of Land at the North Branch be rented out untill the Youngest Son of my Son William Comes to Age and the rent thereof Shall be to Support the Children of my said Son William, And when the Youngest of my said Son Williams Son Shall arrive to the full Age of Twenty One Years then the aforesaid Lot Shall be Sold, and Shall be equally Divided between my son Will and his Children Vis: Abraham, Ann, Mordecai, Mary, Share and share alike Item I Also Appoint and Constitute my Son David and my Son Mordecai and my friend Derick Malate to be my Esecutors of this my last will and Testament to perform and fulfill according to my intent and meaning In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the Day and year above Written. Mordecai McKinney by his mark ?? Signed Sealed Published pronounced and Declared by the Said Mordecai MKenny as his last will and Testement in the presence of us the Sacierebors Vizt: Adam Rancle, Luke Van Coskerk by his mark Jos Forrester. Adam Rancle and Luke Van Caskerk Two of the Witnesses for the within will being Sworn on the hold Doemgelists of Almighty God Did severally Depose that they Said Mordecai MKenny the Testator within named Sign and Seal the Same and heard him publish pronounce and Declare the within Instruments to be his Last will and Testament and that at the Doing thereof the said testator was of Sound and Disposing mind and memory as far as these Deponents know and as they verily believe and that John Forrester the other Subscribing Witness was present at the Same time and Signed his name and Oitnep to the said will in the presence of the said Testator and in the presence of Each Other. Adam Rancle, Luke X Van Coskerk by his mark Sworn the 5th Day of July vi Co before Theo: Severins Surrogate. Be it Demembred that the Last will and Testement of Mordecai McKinny late of the Township of Lebanon and County of Hunterdon, Deceased being duly proved as a Coverdied Probate and Letters Testamentary were Granted by his Excellency Thomas J. Boone Esquire Cap.' General and Governor in Chief of the Colony of New Jersey and unto David Dinny Mordeoai MKinny and Dorrick Molate Executors in the Said Testament named they Being Duly Sworn well and truly to Perform the said Will to Exhibit a true and perfek Inventory and to Render a Just and true Account When thereunto Lawfully required Given under the Prerogative Seal of the said Province the Day and Year above Said.
