 Includes NotesNotes for John Koon:
John Koon was a little over 6 feet tall, he was muscular, powerful, large boned. His hair was black, his eyes dark blue. At his death he still had a head full of hair, with scarcely any white. His complection was neither very dark nor very light. He was born in Holland about 1722. When he was 16 years of age his mother took him to the river and put him on board a sailing vessel for America. She gave him money for his passage and enough to start him in business in America. His parents were thought to be persons of some wealth in his native place. His mother sent John to America to escape military duty. When his mother parted with him and bade him goodbye she said to him "never go into any person's home hungry, and never come out of any person's home hungry." Meaning, no doubt that he should save, and own his own home, property and food and never be dependent on any other person. If, on entering the house of another he was not hungry, he should not stay there until he became hungry. He should earn his food and property by being always alert and active. His ship stopped at Philadelphia where in the course of time, he became engaged to a Welsh lady noted for her beauty, intellect and manners. She was petite and graceful. Her waist is said to have been so small that half a yard of ribbon would encircle her waist easily. Through a " lover's quarrel" he left Philadelphia and went to Frederick, Maryland. At this place he became engaged to another young lady. He then received a letter from Philadelphia, and then was undecided as to what to do. He asked his minister, who told him to go back and marry the young lady in Philadelphia. This he did. They had 7 children and later moved to Frederick, Maryland. After his wife's death, he married a well-educated German lady. It is said she was cruel to the children of his first wife, even driving the son into the storm and snow in his bare feet with only his shirt and trousers on. But, as the children of both wives were friendly in after years, it is presumed that neighborhood gossip made mountains out of a mole hill. There were 7 more children born to the second marriage. His 2nd wife died at Lexington, Kentucky. John Koon died in Warren County, Ohio about 1805. His grandson, John Coon said he remembered playing about with his grandfather and that he himself was about 8 years old when his grandfather died. John Koon was doing guard duty in the Continental Army at the seige of Yorktown, but, as he told his grandson, was only near enough to hear the firing of the guns. John was said to have excellent eyesight which may possibly have been partially due to the fact that he had the habit of gently pressing or kneeding the periphery of his eyeballs, sort of a massage. His features were regular and mild. He was animated and kindly in pleasant conversation, but rather lowering and determined in more heated discussions. He was a man of few words, but those words were always to the point and very decided. He was not inclined to be quarrelsome. He was kindly and well disposed to everyone, many times returning good for evil. He was clean shaven, and his razor, which this writer now owns, and has had for many years, is of finest quality and perfect in its use, as the writer knows from many trials.
