Lineage: The Dobbins are first found at Carrickfergus (Northern Ireland) in 1400, when Peter Dobyn was Constable of the Castle. Between 1571 and 1666, they supplied 17 Sherriffs and 8 Mayors to that town. Thomas Dobbin was Sherriff 5 times between1652 and 1664, and William Dobbin, Controller of Customs, and Mayor in 1666, was the first in that office to be Captain of the Militia. Cadets of the family had established branches at Duneane and in County Down soon after the Plantation, and the Muster Roll of Ulster mentions John, William and Alexander Dobbin as tenants of the Viscount of Ardes in County Down.After the Revolution of 1688, THOMAS, and ROBERT DOBBIN. of the County Down branch, with their nephew, JOHN GILLESPIE, removed from the Moira district and settled at Ternascobe, County Armagh, and in 1710 their youngest brother, LEONARD DOBBIN, removed to Cappagh, near Banbridge.
