Allen Quynn (1726-1803) resided in Annapolis, Maryland. He was described as a cordwainer, land developer, and owner of a tanyard. Maintained a plantation on South River along the mainroad from Annapolis to Alexandria, Virginia; owned a public ferry across the river. He was actively involved in the early affairs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County ie., Legislative Service Lower House, coroner, councilman, constable, Justice of Orphans Court, Mayor and vestryman St. Anne's Parish. Allen Quynn married Elizabeth ??? sometime between 1760 and 1765. He built a home on Cowpen Lane, now known as West Street in Annapolis, later known as the "Johnson House".According to a legislative biography Allen and Elizabeth had three sons, John, William, Allen Jr, and four daughters Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary and Sophia.William (?-1784) Died while a medical student in Edinburgh, Scotland; unmarried.Allen Jr (?-1799) Married Mary Mantz (1765-1835) daughter of Casper Mantz. Elizabeth (?-1811) Married Abraham Claude(?-1800) silversmith.Catherine (?-1838) Married Gen. John Kilty (1756-1811) brother of William Kilty Chancellor of Maryland.Mary (1769-1795) Married Capt. John Gassaway(1754-1820)Sophia unknown. Family records list 4th daughter as Ann (Nancy) Married Thomas Hunter in 1796.Allen's son John married either Elizabeth Padgett in 1782 or Maria Leakin in 1806. We have not been able to document or establish John's birth date. Allen's will contained several yet to be explained relationships. Why did he leave property and establish a trust for a Mrs Jane Howard and her daughter Mrs Elizabeth Rogers? Why in 1806 does the name John Gwinn appear in a court document concerning Allen Quynn last will? The surname Quynn was often misspelled as Guin, Gwin, Gwinn, Gwynn, Quinn, Quyn etc. It has been claimed that some Quynn family members reverted back to the original spelling Gwynn due to a possiblereligious discord. We have been researching the Quynn family history for over twenty years. We are particularly interested in Maryland surnames from 1700 to early 1800's. The following surnames appear to have a direct link to early Quynn families.BADEN, BOWERS, BOWIE, BUCK, CARROLL, CLAUDE, DAVIS, DIGGS, DORSEY, DRYDEN, ENSOR, GASSAWAY, GWINN, GWYNN, HALLER, HARKINS, HOOVER, HOWARD, HUNTER, KEEFER, KILTY, LEAKIN, LYNCH, LLOYD, MANTZ, MERRYMAN, MILLER, PADGETT, QUINN, RIGNEY, ROGERS, RUSSELL, SEWALL, SEWELL, THOMAS, WYVILWe would appreciate any correspondence regarding these early ggggGrandparents. Maybe between us we could fill in some of those missing blanks and establish a link between the allied families. |
