Walter Ernst was adopted by William Thomas and Maude Judy after Walter's natural mother died of Spanish Influenza (pneumonia) on January 9, 1919, leaving five children. Walter was the youngest of the five and an infant at the time of his mother's unfortunate death. His father was unable to care for five small children and allowed the Judy's, who had no other children, to adopt him. The Judy's changed his name to Walter William Judy. Walter did not learn he was adopted until he was in his 20's and entering the Navy during WWII. Upon his return from the war, he married and started a family of his own. Walter never met any of the natural members of his family; however, one of his daughters, Carol, searched for several years and eventually found and met his two surviving sisters in 1998. That event allowed Walter's family to learn about the rich heritage of his ancestors.
