In Norway, they used a patronymic style for last names, which means that the child's last name indicates the father's first name. Ole was the son of Kristoffer, so his name was Ole Kristoffersen. Kristoffer's daughters had the last name Kristoffersdatter and they would not change their names when they marry. So, from the census, you can see that Kristoffer's father was named John and Live (or Lena's) father was named Ole. Many times they also used the farm name as part of their name: Kristoffer Johnsen Rustad. If they moved, the farm name would change. In modern Norway, they do not use patronymic names anymore and some families use the farm name like Rustad instead of an old patronymic name like Johnsen even though they no longer live on that farm, which is apparently the case with your family.
