| From being a rare surname, only found near Thurles in County Tipperary, the Stacklum/Staclum/Stakelum/Steaclum/Steaklum name has spread across Ireland and to America and Australia. The earliest documented person is Robert Stacklum (c1720-1791) who is buried in the family plot in Ballynahow. It is believed that he moved to Ballynahow from Rathkennan which is 4.5 miles SW of Thurles, conflicting stories say the family were originally Danish Pig Farmers, English Settlers or Vikings. The family graves are located in the ruined Ballycahill Church, as they are located within the Church Walls this points to the family being of some standing within the community. This is borne out by the fact that Robert Stacklum (My G.G.Grandfather) is mentioned in the Castle Fogarty papers as Phil Fogarty's Tythe Proctor for Ballycahill. In June 2000 I had the great pleasure of meeting Tommy Stakelum and his family at Ballynahow and also Bob Stakelum at Glenreagh and have called back to see them every year since. I am also researching my paternal line, Raftery/Rafferty, which so far I have traced back to the Roscommon side of Athlone. (James Raftery in the early 1800's). At the moment I am concentrating on my siblings In-Laws family trees as the 1901 Census for England is now online and the 1881 census is available on the LDS site. Any information or corrections would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have. |
