The name Raines is a corruption of de Rennes. In the time of
Robert the Magnificent and William the Bastard, Dukes of
Normandy, our ancestors were the Counts of Rennes, one of the
most ancient and notable cities in Brittanly, in the south of
France.

When William the Bastard conquered England, our ancestors went
with him, and established themselves in Essex, where they
flourished for many years. There is no family of more honorable
descent. The Raines Family is a very ancient and honorable one, having its origin in the Counts of Rennes, Duke of Brittany, from Brittany they passed into England with William
the Conqueror, and were barons there as late as the reign
of Richard the Lion-Hearted. They held vast estates and filled
many positions of honor and Trust.

William Raines born about 1666 is the eldest member we have
found records of in America.
