Marriage Notes for WILLIAM MATHES and ELIZA RAMSEY:
Researched by Mary V. Bass, 1850 census listed family information and they also listed in the household was a black woman named Aggy, aged 70, born in TN. William Thomas Mathes, son of James and Miriam (Thomas ) Mathes, was born in Virginia about 1801, and named for his maternal grandfather, William Thomas. The last of the children to be born in Virginia, he was eighteen, or thereabout, when the family moved from Kentucky to Tennessee in November or Decrmber of 1819. The date of his marriage to Eliza Ramsey has not been determined, but the estate records indicate that it occured before his father died. Eliza Ramsey was from a prominent pioneer family, the daughter of William Ramsey, Jr. and Mary Overall. Eliza's grandfather, William Ramsey, Sr. , served in the American Revolution as Lt. of Militia in Mecklenberg Co. , N.C. On the maternal side , her grandparents were Nathaniel Overall, and Anne Thomas of the Shenandoah Valley families. Her grandfather , Nathaniel Overall, was among those signing the Cumberland Compact in May of 1780; his family is traced to Jost Hite who figured in settlement of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Both the Overall and the Ramsey familes were prominent in Methodist affairs, serving as trustees for Overall Church, Rutherford County , in 1831, and it is probable that William and Eliza reared their family as members of this church. Named in his father's will, William T. Mathes is charged as having already recieved one watch, one horse and saddle, cash of $20,. one bed and one bedstead, and is furthed charged " to come to settlement with his mother about money loaned before he was of age ". At the estate inventory sale, he purchased a wagon, a rifle gun, and two mares. By deed dated March 17, 1838, William purchased the interest of his sister Catherine in the James Mathes land, and in the final division among the heirs, he acquired title to 59 acres of Mathes farm. About this time, he acquired additional land from Abram Overall. At 1850, the family of William T. Mathes is found in the Milton District of Rutherford County, Tennessee, Family No. 299, enumerated for the Census on September 5, 1850;
