From the dark woods and high ceilings of 309 West 138th Street to the narrow streets of Philadelphia (where Grandma Cain used to say "you could jump from one side to the other") to the red clay of Winston-Salem to the slave plantations of Virginia to the shores of England... From Cuba and Florida, to Orange County, Virginia, to a million addresses in Harlem to Central Park West, the branches of our tree spread far and wide... Our family tree research goes a long way towards defining the lives and lifestyles of our ancestors. It has allowed us to look at these people, most of whom I never knew, in a historical context. My parents, Cal and Dolores Jones, have undertaken our family genealogy project with enthusiasm, dedication and respect for our history as African-Americans and as New Yorkers. The history of New York City is indelibly intertwined with my own. Although born in Manhattan, I have only recently been introduced to the Manhattan of my grandfather and great-grandfather - both immigrants to this city in the 1880s.This knowledge of my past has left me with a deep sense of pride in both my family and the city of my birth... | The Roots of Diane Holly Jones Updated September 5, 2000 |
