The following is a translation of an article which appeared in a Danish newspaper after his death.
"Danish Actor Died In Hollywood.
One of the biggest names in the Danish film industry has died in Hollywood. He was one of the most honest and talented actors living in Hollywood. His relatives in Copenhagen have put a short obituary in the newspaper to tell of his death. Anders Randolph was a Jew - his real name was Randrup - and after he had studied for some years in Denmark he went to America where he tried a little bit of everything. He then entered America's first big film (industry) studio, "Vitagraph". In a short time he became one of the studio's illustrious stars. Anders Randolph became a wealthy man and when he became older he retired gradually from the demanding work as an actor in the studios to live with his young Danish wife and daughter in a villa in the Beverly Hills. He kept his house as a meeting place for both Danish and American actors. The last role he played was with Greta Garbo in a film to be released in Denmark in the winter. So we will all get a chance to see the Danish actor onve more, even though he is not among us any more. For all those, and there are many, who have visted the actor's home in a foreign country, they enjoyed a hospitality they will never forget."
Among Marion (Maren) Hall's saved newspaper clippings one in Danish translates as follows : (unfortunately undated) "Frederik the 8" from America The American ship Frederik the VIII came here yesterday forenoon from New York via Halifax and Oslo, bringing a good 300 passengers, mostly farmers, that had visited family or friend in the States. Among the passengers I also took note of famous Film star Randolf's widow and young daughter. She has now let go of her home in California and taken up residence in the Country. An urn with the deceased's ashes was with the ship. Among the passengers was seen the always travelling Doctor Pearboddy from Boston.........
Another clipping in Aunty Marion's papers translated by the mother of Peter Randrup (Canada). Some of the original is unreadable because of wear.
The Movie Emigrants Continues Movies Well Known Dane Is Coming Home When you can't get along with your foster father (????)( See notes from Kirsten Randolf)
In a short while the most popular of American film stars, Norma Talmadge is coming here sometime this summer.
Anna Q Nillson, the famous blonde Swede, and a big chance for Cecil B. De Mille, Julia Fay, this summer.
But we can to-day tell you about a visit that is to come soon, that may be of interest to Copenhagen people more so than the famous Americans; we have in a a few weeks the only Dane who has reached fame on the screen in the whole world, here with us. The talent of so many roles in American silent movies; by far the most talented character actor (player).
America's Best Character Actor-Movie Star. In the last issue of the Swedish Movie News Magazine there is an interview where one of the famous American instructors says about him. He is "the best character actor in the whole United States". The interviewer meets Anders Randolf while filming Ben Hur, that finisihed a few days ago - he spoke English to Anders Randolf but got an answer back in the good old Danish language. The interviewer said I will tell you what you have in front of you - it's America's very best character to me, nothing more, nothing less.
Flight to America.
In his fairy-tale like flight, he said he had as a child a foster father that he didn't get along with, therefore he took off. To begin with when he came to the USA he worked as a Portrait Painter, then got into films and soon advanced to fame- Anders declares he likes the USA best but would not mind living his last days in a villa outside Copenhagen. At home here in Denmark we have seen Anders in many films - last one in Mary Pickford's big film "Dorothy Vernon from Haddon Hall". Randolf's wife has already been in Copenhagen with her little girl for some time.

******************************************* The following is a copy of e-mail received from Kirsten Randolf (wife of grandson) 11 March 1998. I came across an article from a Danish newspaper dated December 29, 1929, telling the life story of Anders Randolf. That article mentioned the name of the farm, Old Rybjerggard as the home of his childhood, so I got in touch with the farm-owner and he had some old valuable information. According to the article Anders Randolf the actor, born Dec 18, 1870, was living at the Old Rybjerggard north of Viborg, with an aunt called Marie Randrup born 1829 (this date has to be erroneous as her parents were not married until 1837 - I have her birthdate from another source as being 1838. NR) and her husband Anders Kristian Jensen, born 1834. They had no children. This boils down to the fact that AR, the only son, and his sisters were the only surviving children of Matthias Randrup and Kristine Jensen. My sources say it was customary for farmers to have part of their children brought up by a family not having children of their own, so that explains why AR lived with foster parents. In 1890 an official count of population took place at Old Rybjerggard, and it was stated that besides AR, aged 19, two of his sisters were living here, Kirstine Randrup, born 1884 and Jensine Marie Randrup, born 1880. Further on it is told that AR did not want to become a farmer as the family wanted, so he saved enough money to leave and arrived in New York in 1893.( Elsewhere shows 1890. nr) From here he went to Denver to visit another aunt, but she died shortly after and he went to Chicago and got into the army and become an officer teaching fencing. In 1912 he came to New York and due to his artist-painter talent he got in touch with the movie industrty later. (Vitagraph). Same year (1912) he married Dorthea Jorgensen from Copenhagen, Denmark. I don't know how they met. In 1917, April 23, their daughter Karen Kristine Randolf was born (my mother-in-law). She died Dec 29, 1989. Her son Peter Michael Mogens Randolf, my husband, born Aug 7, 1942, died by heart attack Oct 16, 1991, leaving me and our son, Anders Peter Randolf II, born July 26, 1973. Paintings, books ( a lot), quite a few accessories from the Hollywood estate, a lot of movie photos etc, and the urn of the actor is in our possession. In the 1980s the Danish Institute of Film had a series of silent movies. I saw "The Kiss" with Greta Garbo and Anders Randolf. Years later I offered the Institute material related to AR but they were not interested at that time. ********************************************
