Descendants of Peter Ransone
1.PETER2 RANSONE(UNKNOWN FATHER OF PETER1) was born Abt. 1615 in England(?), and died Bet. 1662 - 1663 in Virginia. He married ANN SEYMORE Abt. 1637 in probably Virginia. She was born Abt. 1620 in probably Virginia, and died Unknown in probably Virginia.
Notes for PETER RANSONE:
A Steve Frost states b. 1615 in England, d. before 2/10/1663
Robt. J. Ransom also has abt 1615 birth and death 1662-1663 in probably Virginia. He also shows another child of Peter, Robert b. abt.1639 that I've never seen before.
I had merely "died before 1684". This 1684 is based upon the patent granted to his sons, James & George, in that year which states it was willed to them by Peter.
1620/21 - on 10/4/00 found a Lucy Ranson/m who married in 1820 to Thomas Purifoy in Leicestershire England and came to Elizabeth City Co. Va. in 1620. Now, that's almost too much of a coincidence. I created her as a "sister" just to keep track of info her - see additional notes there.
12/28/1642 - a witness, with Edward Bereman, when the patent of Thos. Symons on Charles River was assigned to Thos. Kirbye. Source: Cavaliers and Pioneers 1623-1666 by Nell Nugent.
4/26/1652 - Peter Ransom and John Sheppard were the two representatives from Elizabeth City County to the House of Burgess assembled on 4/26/1652.
11/25/1652: Peter Ransome and Theo. Hone were the two representatives from Elizabeth City County to the House of Burgess assembled on 11/25/1652.
6/9/1653 - the 1100 acres formerly granted to Edmond Dawber on North River of Mobjack Bay was deserted and granted on 6/9/1653 to Peter Ransom. Source: Cavaliers and Pioneers
11/8/1672 - Our first entry in the records on George Bledsoe Minutes of the Council and General Court of Virginia, "At the Genl.Court holden at James City the 8th Nov. 1672, afternoon, Ransom vs. Bledshaw. in the difference between James Ransom plaintiff and Geo. Bledshaw defdant about a parcel of land of nine hundred and fifty acres in Northumberland Ca. on the North Side of Divideing Creeke. It is ordered that a jury by the Sherriffe of the County be impannelled as neare as can be to said land, who are to enquire whether that land was seated or deserted by Peter Ransom father to the said James within due time according to his Pattent and returne their report thereof under their hands to the 3rd day of the next Genll Court for Judgment."
"At a Genll Court held at James Citty the l2th March 1673, Ransom vs.Blettsoe. It is ordered by consent of the Plaintiff and Defendant James Ransom and Geo: Blettsoe that the cause of last Court referred to this be continued and refference to the third day of the next Genll Court in September to which Court the juries verdt as by that ord is to be returned for judgmt."
From the above it appears that George Bledsoe had occupied land claimed by James Ransom by virtue of his father's having once occupied the same land. The verdict of the jury has not been found, but it is
clear that George Bledsoe won, because we do find two deeds referring to this tract:
8/12/00: a Ranson GenForum posting by Wilson Coleman gives Peter's birthplace as Lancaster England. I've not seen this said before and no evidence is seen.
Notes for ANN SEYMORE:
The Meacham website has Ann Seymour as Peter's wife and gives footnoted credit to the web page Frost Family Ancestors.
Anne McAllister, in email of 1/12/2000, says that Ann Seymore is not Peter's wife and that that concept arose from a very noted genealogist, Mrs. Kerr (she believes), who guessed this because James Ransom (m. Priscilla Jones Macon) named a son Seymour. However, that name arose because James was a stepson of Seymore Powell who had married his mother as a third husband after his father, Richard, had died.
Children of PETER RANSONE and ANN SEYMORE are:
i. | WILLIAM3 RANSONE, b. Abt. 1638, Virginia; d. Bef. 1684. |
Notes for WILLIAM RANSONE: Apparently unmarried. The patent by Governor Berkley issued to George and James Ransone (William's brothers) in 1684 for 1100 acres on South River on Nickajack (Mobjack) Bay, formerly granted to Peter Ransone and willed by him to James and George Ransone would suggest William had died before it was issued. Had abt 1640 birth year (from Richard Luht site) but Robt. J. Ransom has abt 1638. |
2. | ii. | GEORGE RANSOM, b. 1642, Virginia; d. Bet. March 19, 1674 - September 07, 1675, Virginia. | |
3. | iii. | CAPTAIN JAMES RANSOM, b. 1645, probably Virginia; d. Aft. 1704, probably Virginia. |
