One of the earliest references to Emanuel is contained in the book, "The Early Settlers of Maryland," by Gus Skordas, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, Maryland, 1968, page 380, lists Emanuel Ratcliff as having immigrated to St. Mary's County in 1669 from Virginia. The book "The Maryland Calendar of Wills," compiled and edited by Jane Baldwin, Volume I, 1968, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, MD, page 82 lists "brother Emanuel Ratliffe and Eliza" as receiving "personalty" in the will of Daniel Gover of St. Mary's County. The will is dated the 9th of June 1674. Additionally, "Maryland Calendar of Wills," on page 118, again mentions "Emanuel Ratcliff" as a testator in the will of John Mackey, St. George's Hundred, St. Mary's County, Maryland. The will is dated 26th February, 1675. The book "Settlers of Maryland 1679-1700," by Peter Wilson Coldham, 1995, Genealogical Publishers, Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD, on page 140, lists Emanuel Ratliffe as purchasing 100 acres of land in Charles County, Maryland, on 22 March, 1688. The name of the tract is "Pencott's Folly."
