I became interested in my family's history in 1983 after a visit to northeast Iowa at the same time that cousin Jim Rausch and his wife and daughter were visiting. My mother, Esther Behrens Rausch, took us to cemeteries in Fort Atkinson, Spillville, Festina, and in the country between towns. My notes from those visits were the earliest entries in my family tree information.
I later received many items from Lorraine Bodensteiner Kuennen, who has done much work in researching family information, including visiting the small German town of Aschaffenburg,where Joseph's father came from.
Why start with Joseph? Because I could find living descendants of all 7 of his children.
