RAVIE, REVIE, REEVY (1825 - Now /Newtownards (N.I), Ayr, West Lothian.) Sept of the clan MacDonald (of the isles) Revie , Macilrevie
Revie.
From south west Scotland, from Macilriach . Surnames of Scotland go deeper than this MacilRavie, MacilRevie and MacilReavie = MacilRiach.

In G. Mac 'ille riabhaich, son of (the) brindled lad.' This is the most common patronymic or surname compounded with gille-. It is common in Galloway and throughout the highlands, and was a common personal name in Breadalbane 200 and more years ago (1746) .

Macilvraith is an old name in the parish of Ballantrae , and it was a common surname in Kintyre and Islay, appearing on old tombstones there as Macilraich , now shortened to Revie.

The name also exists in Uist and Skye, but mostly swallowed up in English by Macdonald. Buchanan recorded the M'Ilrevies as a sept under Clanranald, In Kilmuir, Skye , there is a place called Baile Mhic Ileriabhaich 'township of the Macgilleriabhachs.'

A bond of manrent ( a written agreement whereby a free person becomes a follower of a patron or defender.) was signed between the M'Ilwraiths and the lord of the Isles at Castle Camus (Knock), Sleat, Skye on August 13 1632.

The earlist date I have for my side of the Ravie's is 1825 in Newtownards, Northern Ireland, with the birth of David Reevy. Next is the Birth of John in Stevenston, Ardrossan, in 1835, they seemed to be farm workers and by 1855 they were living in Coylton Ayrshire, between 1861and 1866 they had moved to Bathgate . In 1890 they were working for Young's Paraffin and Mineral Oil Company at Uphall Station.

Welsh. (1748-1990 /Kilconquhar Fife, Edinburgh, West Lothian).
This family stayed in Elie and Earlsferry in Fife. One section had moved and by 1864 they were staying in Edinburgh.

BOWIE. (1737-Now /Bo,ness- Edinburgh, Scotland./ USA. Colorada).
BOWIE, BUIE. From the gaelic adjective buidhe 'yellow (or fair ) haired.' In Argyllshire curtailed form of Macilbowie. Bowie was and still is a common name in Jura, there was a small sept of the name in South Uist. The Bowies of Strathspey are counted followers of the Grants.
" From 'The Bowies and Their Kindred' by Walter Worthington Bowie"
The origin of the name of Bowie is lost in the mists and shadows of antiquity. The word is probably a blending of the early Norse, or Scandinavian, and the later Gaelic of the Scottish Highlander.
We gather from tradition that the progenitor of the name was one of the reckless and roving vikings of Norway, who "harried" the coasts of Caledonia, and whose descendants finally settled in the western isles of Scotland and the neighboring shores. Professor Anderson, of the University of Wisconsin, an authority on Scandinavian literature, writes, in 1896, to Miss Virginia Berkley Bowie, in regard to the derivation of the word. He says: "It is very difficult to trace the origin of names, and the nearest we can come to the significance of your name Bowie is your own construction. Bua, in the old Norse, means to 'dwell,' and 'bua sik' means to 'get ready.' Bua is the past participle buin, and bua sik, and buin, survive in our English 'busk' and 'bown.' They 'busked themselves for the fray;' they were 'all busk and bown' for the journey. We have the word buer, which means a farm. In modern Norwegian bu means an inhabitant. Sandeidsbu means a 'dweller in Sandeid.' Then we have the old name Bui, or Bue, 'Bue Digre,' or 'Bue the Thick,' or 'Big Bue.' I am of the opinion that Bue means a dweller on the farm, and I know no other name in the North from which Bowie could be derived.

1835 Bo'ness - 1837 St Cuthberts Edinburgh, Scotland. Districts in which they lived were, Cannon Gate, Abbey Hill and Drylaw.

One side of the family emmigrated to Nova Scotia in 1867, then to Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New Mexico and Finally Colorado, where the town Bowie was named after William Bowie.

Garvie. (Pre 1800)
